The Schedule referred `to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Beit known that I, Lodis E. OBRIEN, of Latrobe, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, baveyinvented4 a certain new and useful Improvement on Cheek-Valves; and `I do herebydeelare thatthefollowingis a full,'clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the marks and letters thereon, which said drawing forms part of this specification, and shows my invention as used ihla feed-.water pipe- Figure 1 thereof being a view by elevation; Figure 2, a view by vertical section; and Figures-3 and 4, views of the valve-cage. In each of these igureswhere like parts are shown,
y like marks and letters are used to indicate tlie parts.
Ordinarily, that portion of `the feed-water pipe directly attached to the forcing-pump'is connected to `the check-valve chinnber4 `by'ilauges and screws, with packing between the flangedsurfaces to make a tight joint.` Y
In case of anyaccidena'or whenever, for any reason, it is desirable to reach `the`check-valve, the de-l taching of the connection between the-forcing-pump part ofthe pipe, and the check-valve chamber, is slow and tedious, and often causes considerable delay in reaching and remedying whatever diculty may exist.
My invention has for its object the ready detaching of the feed-pipe from the cheek-valve chamber,- of the easy removal of thev valve, its seatfand 'cage, ffo r 'cleaning the valve and seat, or for the removal of any cause that'may obstruct the free use of the valve. 1 Thforcing-pump portion of the feed-pipe, under my invention, is connected'to the check-valve chamber Vc by a joint-piece, b, one end of which screws into the feed-pipe and the other end into the chamber.
` Within the valve-chamber the check-'valve c, its
seat, d, and cage e, are so fit-ted as to fullyand accurately perform their several functions, and yet, when the joint-piece i's detached, to he easily and readily removed, cleansed, and-repaired,,orreplaced by other pieces, and quickly refitted in the chamber.l
It will readily be seen by examining the drawing how this can be accomplished. Suppose theupart's within the valve-chamber to be out of order; the stop onregnlator-valvefwill be screwed down to its seat, g, shutting of the communication between thejauk,
reservoir, or steam-boiler, as the case may bethr`g.\. ugh the upper portion hof thefeed-water pipe. The foreiiigpump not being in operation, as it may at any moment be thrown out of Vgear with the engine or other motive4 power, the joint-piece b can, with a few turns of the wrench, be separated from the pipe and chamber, thus allowing access'to the valve-chamber and the easy 4removal of the valve-seat, valve, and cage.
l IThe joint-piece b, incombinat-iou with the valveseat, valve,l and cage, arranged within the check-valve chamber, so as to allow of their ready removal fro(n the chamber, as and for the purposes described.
This specification signed this 21st day of' May, 1870 LOUIS E. OBRIEN.
