To all w/wm it may concern:

Be it known that 1, PAUL SOLUM, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at McKee, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a mail tube having improved locking means. i 7

Another object of the invention is to provide a mailing tube having the locking means secret and concealed by false representations of riveting.

With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 isa side elevation of the improved tube partly broken away and showing the locking means in locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the locking means in unlocked position. 3 is a detail transverse section on the line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4- is a detail of the locking bar and adjacent parts removed from the casing. Fig. 5 is an end view of the tube. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5 but showing the tube open. Fig. 7 is a detail section of one end of the tube. Fig. 8 is a detail showing a certain rivet used as a head for the locking bar.

In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a box consisting of two semi-cylindrical halves 10 and 11 which are hinged together as at 12 along one edge. Each of these halves comprises an inner portion 13 and an outer portion 14 making a double wall structure throughout the entire box. Around each end of the box there is provided a row of riveting 16 and along the edges are similar rows of riveting 16, the riveting simulating fastening means. Slidably mounted between the walls of one section adjacent its free edge is a bar 17 which has projecting therefrom arms 18 having angular extensions 19 at their ends. These arms and angular extensions lie between the walls of the other section when the box is closed and this other section carries pins 20 so positioned that when the bar 17 is moved into one position the extensions 19 will engage the pins and hold the sections locked, as shown in Fig. 1, while when the bar is moved in the opposite direction the extensions will be free from the pins, as shown in Fig. 2. On this bar. 17 is further provided a lug 21 which is on the side of the bar opposite one of the arms 18. Each of the halves is slotted as at 22 and through these slots pass pins 23 having heads simulating riveting. To oifset the unusual position of these rivets out of the line of riveting similarly positioned rivets 24: are provided adjacent the opposite end of each section of the box so that the riveting appears symmetrical.

Between the walls of each section is provided a pin 25 and around two of the rivets in the rows 16 are Secured springs 26 which pass around these pins and also around the rivets 23, the springs normally urging the rivets or pins 23 inward. The position of these rivets 23 is such that when the bar 17 is in the position indicated in Fig. 1, one of the pins 23 will lie behind one of the arms 18 while the remaining pin lies behind the lug 21, thus preventing the box from being accidentally unlocked.

The end of the box is provided with a suit-able slot through which the bar 17 extends and on this outwardly extending end is provided the semblance of a rivet as indioated at 27 thus constituting the head of the bar.

In operation when it is desired to open the box the same is grasped in one hand and the rivets or pins 23 moved apart to the position shown in Fig. 2. The other hand is then used to pull out upon the bar 17, the fingers grasping the head 27. When the bar has been pulled out as indicated in Fig. 2 the box will readily swing open for the introduction of a paper roll, as shown at 28, the roll being shown dotted prior to placing it in the box, and in full lines when in position.

It will, of course, be obvious that the arms 18 will be slightly curved to fit properly between the inner and outer walls, this curvature being shown in Fig. 6.

There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described, and for the purpose specified,

Having thus described the invention,w'hat is claimed as new, is

1. In a receptacle of the class described, a pair of semi-cylindrical sections provided with rows of simulated rivets, hinges c0nnecting one edge of one section to a similar edge of the other section, a locking bar slidably mounted on one of said sections and provided with arms having angularly disposed ends adapted to extend within the other section when the box is closed, pins carried by the last-mentioned section and adapted to be engaged by said ends, a head on said bar simulating a rivet, pins slidably mounted in said sections, a lug on said bar, one of said arms, said lug, and slidable pins being arranged to permit the pins engaging behind the arm and lug when the box is locked, and springs normally urging the last-mentioned pins into locking position.

In a device of the kind described, a air of sections of semi-cylindrical form each comprising an inner wall and an outer wall, hinges connecting the longitudinal edge of one section with a similar longitudinal edge of the other section, a locking bar slidably mounted between the walls of one section and projecting through one end of said section, arms extending from said locking bar and arranged to lie between the walls of the other section when the box is closed, ends extending at right angles from the extremities of said arms, keeper pins extending across the space between the inner and outer walls of the last-mentioned section and arranged to be engaged by said ends to lock the box, other pins mounted in said sections and arranged to slide at right angles to the movement of the bar, a lu on said bar opposite one of said arms, the lastmentioned pins being adapted to engage behind said arm and lug when the box is locked, springs normally urging the last mentioned pins into engaging position, and heads on the last-mentioned pins and the end of the bar simulating rivets.
