To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL Siornn) BERGI-I- MARK, engineer, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification. I
The present invention refers to a butterchurn with rotating vessel and the characteristics of this churn consist in a number of insets detached from, or independent of, the vessel and rotating in opposite directions to each other.
Butter-chin-ns are before known which are provided with a rotating vessel and with one dasher rotating in the opposite direction to the vessel and with the same speed as this latter. As known, the employment of a rotating vessel has the advantage that the cream, in consequence of the rotation of the vessel, is pressed against the walls of the vessel and forms a more compact mass than in a non-rotating vessel, so that it makes a greater resistance whereby the preparing of the cream can be made more effective than in a non-rotating vessel. But by employing one dasher only rotating in the opposite direction to the rotating vessel and with the same speed as this latter the advantages of the rotating vessel cannot be fully utilized. By employing two or more insets, however, rotating in opposite direction to each other, and detached from, or independent of, the
vessel in the rotating vessel, different layers of the above said more compact cream are caused to move in opposite directions, whereby a working is attained which will in a high degree facilitate and hasten the separation of the fatty globules. Furthermore, there is gained the effect strived to reach that the process of churning proceeds rapidly even at a very low temperature of the cream, a circumstance which, as is well known, is of course an advantage, as the butter by this means assumes a particularly solid and durable consistency. The speed of the insets arranged in the above mentioned manner in relation to the vessel and to each other can be varied in all imaginable and suitable ways.
On the annexed drawing abutter-churn according to the invention in question is shown only as an example in vertical section.

(3 is a sleeve screwed into the bottom and the gear 5, through the same there runs another sleeve 7, which is screwed into a bevel gear 8, which engages an inner circle of cogs on the cogwheel 4. and makes the inset l0, threaded and fastened on the sleeve 7, rotate in the same direction as the vessel, and at a lower rate of speed than the same.
11 is a shaft passing through the inner sleeve 7, and this shaft runs in bearings 12 in the stand 9, and on its upper end an inset- 13 is attached. This latter is made to rotate in an opposite direction to the vessel and at the same rate of speed as the latter by the bevel gear 14 on the aforesaid shaft 11 engaging the outer circle of cogs on the wheel 4:.
The arrangement of a number of insets independent of the rotating vessel and rotating in an opposite direction to each other, possesses, besides the above mentioned advantages also the advantage that it enables the entire omission of the projections or stops attached to the vessel in earlier constructions, by which means the vessel can more easily be cleaned, which is of great hygienic importance. In the example shown on the drawing the inset 10 follows the bottom of the vessel in a radial direction outward, and passes some distance up the side 'of' the vessel, and may thus perform the same service as projections or stops set fast in the bottom and side of the vessel.
It will easily be seen that a larger or smaller number of insets of one kind or another can be attached, and that such can be done in a radial or peripheral direction, or both. If these are to have differentspeeds, this result can be obtained by for eX- ample arranging a corresponding number of shafts and cogwheels for them, which shafts or cogwheels may be of the same nature as those shown on the drawing. Other wise the separate parts of the churn may be varied as to material, shape, number, size and combination, and they may be reversed provided only that the characteristics of the invention are retained.
I claim 1. In a butter churn, in combination, asingle rotating vessel forming the outer part of the churn, and a plurality of insets within said vessel and means for rotating said vessel and said insets in opposite directions, said insets being detached from said vessel.
2. In a butter churn, in combination, a single rotatii'lg vessel forming the outer part of the churn, a plurality of insets within said vessel and means for rotating said vessel and said insets in opposite directions and at di'licrent speeds, said insets being detached from said vessel.
In a butter churn, in combination, a single rotating vessel forming the outer part of the churn, an inset within the vessel and detached therefrom, said inset being shaped to follow the contour of the vessel along the bottom and wall thereof, means for rotating said inset and said vessel in the same direc tion, a second inset detached from said vessel and means for rotating said second inset in the opposite direction to said first inset.

In a butter churn, in combination, a single rotating vessel forming the outer part of the churn, an inset within the vessel and detached therefrom, said inset being shaped to follow the contour of the vessel along the bottom and wall thereof, means for rotating said inset and said Vessel in the same direction, said means rotating said inset at a lower speed than said vessel, a second inset detached from said vessel and means for ro tating said second inset in the opposite direction to said first inset.
5. In a butter churn, in combination, a single rotating vessel forming the outer part of the churn, an inset within the vessel and detached therefrom, said inset being shaped to follow the contour of the vessel along the bottom and wall thereof, means for rotating said inset and said vessel in the same direction, a second inset detached from said vessel and means for rotating said second inset in the opposite direction to said first inset, said rotating means comprising gear wheels positioned beneath said vessel.
(3. In a butter churn, in combination, a single rotating vessel forn'iing the outer part of the churn, an inset within the vessel and detached therefrom, said inset being shaped to follow the contour of the vessel along the bottom and wall thereof, means for rotating said inset and said vessel. in the same direction, said means rotating said inset at a lower speed than said vessel, a second inset detached from said vessel and means for rotating said second inset in the opposite direction to said first inset, said rotating means comprising gear wheels positioned beneath said vessel.
