plate is similar in designto the plate 3 on the door, and is provided with a socket 22 disposed within the frame and in alinement with the locking bolt 5 to forms keeper for the latter when the door is dis osed to its 'closed position. lit will there 'ore require a turning of the spindle 9 to release the locking bolt 5 from the keeper after the door has, once been disposed tov its closed position. Secured on the inner andbuter faces respectively of the door 1, are the plates 23 and 24, through which the spindle 9 extends, said plate 24 being provided with an integral tubular portion 25 on which the "knob 26 is formed and that portion of said spindle which extends through the tubular portion 25 is reduced as shown at 28.
The reduced portion 28 of the spindle 9 has mounted thereon a washer 27 one face of which abuts the shoulder formed between the main portion of the spindle and the said reduced portion thereof, the opposite face of said washer being reduced to form a shoulder which abuts the shoulder 27 formed on the tubular portion 25 and a coil spring 29 .is encircled about said reduced portion 28 between the opposite face of the washer 27 and a head formed on the free end of the reduced portion 28. Thus it will be seen that the tendency of the spring 29 will be toforcethe spindle outwardly toward the knob 26, it being appreciated'that the shoulder formed by the reduced ortion- 28 and the main portion'of the spindle 9 will limit said-outward movement. This knob 26, which is disposed on the outer face of the door 1, is substantially hollow, having mounted on the inner face of the outer wail thereof, a block or thickened plate 31,
said plate having one face thereof provided with a socket 32 to receive a projection 33 formed on the head 30 of the reduced portionot saidspindle. This block or plate 31 is so disposed that the socket 32 therein will be in normal alinerrent with the projection so that when the spring 29 torces the spindle in the position shown in Fig. 4, the projection 33 will be received in the open ing 32, which will be the normal position of the device and the socket 32 communicates with a channel or additional socket 3& ex-
tending throughthe plate or blockBl, the wall of said latter socket or channel being tion 33 of the head 30. "When the key 37 is so disposed through the knob 26, which is a substantial lock, so that the lugs on the free end of the same engage the openings in the projection 33, said key may be turned, which turning will cause the spindle 9 to be turned, thereby withdrawing the locking bolt 5.
It will be appreciated that in view of the fact that the knob 26 is formed directly on the plate 24 and not rotatable with respect thereto, said spindle 9 may not be turned until the proper key has been inserted and l have also provided means whereby the locking bolt may be withdrawn by operation from the inner side of the door, even though a slug or fake key has been inserted in. the lock and broken therein, which means-will be hereinafter and more particularly described.
The plate 23, which, as stated reviously,
door 1, has formedthereon an integral collar or the like 39, through which extends the spindle 9 and the outer face of which is beveled, as shown at 40 and a knob 41 is also provided, the same having formed, thereon an integral tubular portion 42. The one end of said tubular portion is also provided with a collar portion 43 adapted to abut against the collar 39 and the contacting .faee of said latter collar portion $3 is beveled coincident to the beveling of said collar 39. The spindle 9 extends through this tubular portion-.42 and into the knob 41, said spindle being secured to said tubular portion so that u on the turning of-the knob l1, it will appreciated that the spindle 9 will be turned. lit willbe seen, however, that the collar 39 is stationarily mounted with respect to the collar 4:3, so that as said knob 41 is turned to correspondingly turn the spindle 9, the beveled contacting faces of said collars 39 and 43 will cause said spindle 9 to be partially withdrawn,
the spring 29 yielding under this drawin action. that the withdrawing ot the spindle 9 will not efitect the turning thereolt, but will. withdraw the projection 33 of the head 30 from the socket 32 and thus should therohave, been a slug or other imitation key inserted within the knob 26 and broken oti' therein,-the device will notbe afiect-ed so far as operation thereof from the inside is concerned. It will be seen therefore that the locking bolt maybe withdrawn at any time desired from the inside by the mere turning of the knob ll while said bolt may only be withdrawn from the outside by the insertion of the proper key through the knob 26 and the turning of said key.
From the foregoing it will. be seen that l have provided a simple, inexpensive and eiiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while i have particua; it will, of course, be appreciated $5 is the plate secured to the inner ace of the larly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction -may be resorted to withont'departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is l. A device of the class described com prising a casing, a bolt slidably arranged therein, said bolt being provided with a pair oflongitudina'l alining slots, a spindle extending through said slots, means to nor- 'mally dispose said bolt in its extended po-' sition, a pair of pivoted arms c'arried on the rear end of said bolt, and a tripmember carried on the spindle adapted for engagement with the fre ends of said arms toretrac't' said bolt upon the turning of the spindle.
2.'A deviceof the class described comprising a casing, a bblt slidabl arranged therein, said bolt being provited with a pair of alining longitudinal slots and also provided with a central longitudinal channel, a spindle extending through said slots having mounted thereon. an arcuate trip member, said trip member being provided with a pair of shoulders on the periphery thereof, a spring member disposed in said longitudinal channel and enga' ing said trip member to normally dispose t e bolt in its extended position, and a'pair of arms ivotaly carried on the rear end of said b0 t and having the free ,ends thereof disposed -in engagement with the shoulders on said trip member, whereby said bolt will be retracted upon 'the turning of the spindle.
.3.- The combination with a door, and a means in connection with the last referred i to knob adapted to receive in engagement therewith a portion of said spindle, additional means cooperating with the last mentioned knob for turning said spindle, and
means coa'ct-ing with the first referred to knob for withdrawing said spindle from its operative connection with said other knob. 4. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a door and a bolt slidably' arranged therein;. of a spindle extendin through the door to cotiperate with sai bolt, said spindle being capable of a slight transverse movement t-herethrough, a pair of knobs for the door, one of said knobs being carried directly on the spindle, the other knob being mounted on the door proper, a head formed on one end of said spindle and disposedwwithin the last .mentioned knob, means in connect-ion with said last mentioned knob to receive a portion of said head when the spindle is in its normal position, means adapted for application to the last" mentioned knob .for engagement with the head to turn said spindle, and means co-acting wit-h the first mentioned knob for withdrawing said spindle from its' operative connection with said other knob. In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
