To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, ALONZO F. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis. in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Reels and St-retchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in clothes line reels and stretchers.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a simple and cheap device of this character, and one which is effective in its operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan View. Fig. 4l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 1-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 6-6 of F ig. 2, looking in the directie-n of the arrows.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings 10 and 11 represent the side plates of the frame of the device. These frames are triangular in shape and have the openings 12 formed in their bases which are adapted to receive the ends of the spacing rods 13, the said ends of the rods having the stop collars 14. which bear against the inner faces of the plates 10 and 11, and have their outer ends bent to form heads on the outer sides of the said plates. In the apex of each of the plates is formed a larger opening 15, the purpose of which will appear later, as well as an opening 16 formed in an enlargement 17 at one edge of the plate 11. Mounted in these plates 10 and 11 is a reel which consists of the disks 18 and 19 and the shaft 20. The disk 19 has a central opening 21 for the reception of the reduced end 22 of the shaft 20. Secured on the outer face of the disk 19 is a small disk 23 which has projecting from its outer face a pintle 24, said pintle being received in the opening 15 of the plate 10. Secured to the outer face of the disk 1S is a ratchet wheel 25, from the outer face of which projects a pintle 26, said pintle being received in the opening 15 of the plate 11. Projecting from the other face of the ratchet wheel 25 is a tubular member 27 which receives the reduced end 28 of the shaft 20, said tubular member having an opening 29 through which a nail or a screw is driven to hold said member 27 to the shaft. The disk 23 has an obliquely arranged opening 30 through which a nail is driven into the end of the reduced portion 22 of the shaft 20.
A pawl 31 is provided with a stud 32 which is received through the opening 16 of the plate 11, said stud having a transverse opening in its outer end for the reception of a split key The nose of this pawl engages with the teeth of the ratchet wheel 25, and holds the drum aga-inst backward r0- tation. This pawl is a gravity pawl, and is provided with a laterally projecting finger piece 34 for raising the pawl from the teeth of the ratchet.
Formed integrally with the ratchet wheel 25 and the member 27 is an aperture eXtension 35 which is adapted to receive the end of the clothes line 36, which is knotted on the opposite end of said extension. A curved and inclined guard 37 extends from the extension part way around, and concentric with the member 27.
Mounted on the outer end of the pintle 26 is a handle 3S, which has on one end a hand grip 39. The opposite end of the handle is doubled on itself at 39, the adjacent portions being' formed with the o-penings 40 which receive the end of the spindle 26, which is square in cross section. Disposed in a threaded opening +11 in the bend 39 of the handle is a set screw 42, which, when the handle is positioned on the spindle 26, will bear against one face of said spindle, to hold the handle against movement on the spindle.
The reduced end 2S of the shaft 20 and the tubular member 27 are disposed in an opening 43 formed centrally in the disk 18, an arcuate opening 14 being formed at one side of the opening 43 to permit the entrance of the extension and guard 37.
The outer face of the ratchet wheel 25 is formed with a number of countersunk openings for the reception of screws by means of which the ratchet is attached to the disk 1S.
