Description

E. W. WALTON.
. 7 Gang Plow.
No.105,528. Pateni'ed July 19, 1870.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELISHA W. WALTON, OF SAN LEANDRO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN GANG-PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,528, dated July 19, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELISHA W. WALTON, of San Leandro, county of Alameda, State of Oalifornia, have invented an Improved Gang- ]?low; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled" in the artor science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experimentr My invention relates to an improved construction of gang-plows, and more particularly to that classic which the plows are attached toa .frame which is connected with the trucks, and
by raising and lowering which upon the bar 'which connects the two wheels the plows are dropped, so as to enter the ground, or elevated above it, as desired.
In order to fullydescribe my invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
cam or eccentric bar, a, which is operated by a short lever,b,and by setting the sliding standard B and turning the eccentric by means of the lever 12 until it binds against the bent ends of the axle the wheels are adjusted for plowing.
On each side of the pole D, and directly in front of the bar A, are fixed two metal plates, E, having each an angular slot, 01.
The plow-frame F is placed upon the bar A,
so that'its front end will rest upon it, and it, has secured to the end of each of the timbers a metal plate, 0, the end of which is formed into a projectingpin, e, which stands at right angles to the plate 0, entering the angular slots 01., and by this means keeps the frame to its place.
Secured to the bar A, underneath the tim bers of the frame, are two cams, G, from which extend two arms, f, passing up on each side of the pole D,'inside of the timbers of the-frame. To the upper ends of these arms are attached rods g, which extend forward between the plates E, where they are loosely attached to the arm h of the shaft H, which bears in the upper end of the plates E, and is operated by the hand-lever or sweep I.
The foot-rest J is secured upon the top of the plates E, while the springs K, to which the seatis attached, is secured to the rear end of the pole.
When the lever or sweep 1 is thrown forward the pins 0 rest in the lower part of the angular slot 61, thus allowing the frame to rest upon the bar A and lowering the plows into the ground; but when the lever isthrown back the cams G' raise the frame until the pins 6 are lifted to the upper ends of the slots d, thus elevating the plows out of the ground.
The clevis consists of a T-shaped piece of metal, P, attached to the end of the pole, so that the upper or transverse bar, 10, will stand at right angles to the pole. The barp is provided with anumber of small holes, as shown.
A movable bar, V, is pivoted to the pole, and has a small pin, a, depending from it in the proper position to enter the holes in the transverse bar 1;. The end of the bar Vis formed into a hook suitable for hitching to.
By moving this bar so that the pin a shallenter the holes at either side the plows can be made to take more or less land, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The device for elevating and lowering the plow-frame, consisting of the slotted plates E,
the plates e, and the cams G, with their arms fand rods g, said rods being attached to the arm h of the shaft H, and the whole operated by the sweep I, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hewe hereunto set my hand and seal. v
