PENGIL-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
Application led January 10, 1912. Serial No. 670,489.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it lmown that I, WALTER G. Roenus, citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is -a specification.
This invention relates to artists appliances and more particularly to attachments for spatulas or palette knives, the object being to conveniently position a sharpening device upon this instrument in such a manner that the artists pencils may be conveniently sharpened.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, l represents the handle of an ordinary palette knife and 2 the ordinary palette blade. Secured upon the blade by means of a screw 3 which passes therethrough is a mounting block 4 having flanges 5 to engage upon opposite sides of the blade and prevent turning or lateral movement of said block. The block is provided with a longitudinal kerf 6 in which is seated a cutting blade 7. This blade is held in position against a filler block 8 by means of a screw 9 which is entered into the block and bears directly upon the filler block.
In the operation of the device, the end of the palette blade is placed upon a suitable support with the pencil held in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the knife reciprocated over the same by sliding the palette blade over the support longitudinally. The pencil being held on the support, the point is less liable to be broken and as the palette blade will flex with each movement, the point of thel pencil may be readily sharpened.
What I claim as new is Y l. In combination, a handle having a flexible member secured thereto and in line therewith, a mounting device carried by the flexible member intermediate its ends and a blade secured to the mounting device and having a cutting edge arranged at right angles to the flexible member.
2. In combination, a handle having a flexible member secured thereto and in line therewith, a mounting device carried by the flexible member intermediate its ends, means for preventing the mounting device from turning upon the flexible member, and a blade carried by the mounting device and having an edge arranged at right angles to the line of the flexible member.
3. In combination, a handle having a fiexible member alined therewith and an edged blade carried by the flexible member intermediate its ends and extending laterally beyond the side of the same.
4. In combination, a handle having a flexible member secured thereto and in line therewith, a mounting device secured to the flexible member intermediate its ends and having flanges extending upon opposite sides of said member to prevent the mounting member' from turning thereon and a knife blade reversibly mounted in the mounting device and extended beyond the side of the flexible member, said blade having an edge arranged at right angles to the line of the flexible member.
5. In combination, a flexible blade having a handle, a mounting block secured to the blade intermediate its ends and having flanges extending upon opposite sides of the blade to prevent the block from turning, said block having a kerf therein, a filler plate mounted in the kerf, an edged knife reversibly mounted in the kerf, and a screw threaded into the block and adapted to clamp the filler plate against the knife.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER G. ROGERS.
Witnesses H. S. FALKMAN, P. R. EAsTnRnAY.
