LOOM.
To all 'ur/iom it may concern."
Be it known that we, S'IANISLAUS Leooox and J osern Toncorrn, citizens of the United States, residing at Puwtucket, in the county of llrovidencc and State of .Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in. Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in looms, and relates more ulrticularly to an improved device for introducing a cord in what is known as leno or cross-weaving.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and economical mechanism for the purpose above set forth, in which the number of cords, depending upon the peculiarity of the weave, may be readily varied as desired.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a frogmentary perspective view. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail fragmentary side elevations showing two positions of the disks that carry the cords, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail. side elevation of one of the cord carrying disks.
Each side of the loom frame is designated 1 in the drawings, and has an iuvertcd'U- shaped bracket 2 secured thereto, this especial shape of bracket being employed in order to accommodate and permit of free play of the rods 3 that connect the lay 4 with the crank shaft 5 to operate the latter during the process of weaving. 'lo the brackets 9 horizontal slotted arms (3 are adjustably cured by bolts 7 the bolts passing through the slots oi. the arms. A bearing plate 8 is secured to the outer end of each arm 6 the plates 8 supporting" a shaft Shaft 9 extends tl'iroughout the entire width of the loom and carries a. spring rod 10, which latter is disposed parallel to the shaft and has its ends secured thereto. Shaft ll and rod 10 are provided with a series of alinimr notches that receive the end wallsformed by the kcy -l'lolc shaped slots ll of the cord carrying disks 12. A pulley .13 is secured to an end ol the shaft 9 and has two straps secured thereto. one ol which straps l4 is connected to the jack 15 to be operated by the pattern chain. thereby to partially revolve the shaft 9. The other strap 16 is connected by a coiled spring 17 to the floor, whereby the spring will return the shaft 5) to normal'po- Specification of Letters Patent.

sition after artial rotation thereof. Each disk 12 is ormed with a half-moon like shaped opening 18 which provides a Semicircular rim 19 which is provided With-o. central aperture 20 through which a cord 21 passes. A second cord 22 extends through the space 18.
The operation is as follows: The to and fro movement of the jack 15 causes corresponding movement of the strap 14, and the latter partially rotates the shaft 9 through 66 the intermediary of the pulley 13, the shaft upon outward movement of the jack being restored to normal position by means of the strap 16 and the spring 17, thus imparting to the shaft by lioned a rotary reciprocatory or alternating rotary movement. Since the disks 12 are mounted on the shaft 9, they partake of its stated movement, thus causing the disks to assume the two extreme positions depiclcd in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. When the disks are in the position shown in Fig. 4, the yarn 21. is depressed, thus causing, same to cross over the yarn 22 that extends through the openings 18, bringing the yarn 92 to the surface of the goods be ing woven, and when the shaft 9 is returned to normal position the yarn 21 will. be brought to the surface to be woven into the goods, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The raising of the yarn 22 to the position illustrated in l ig. t of the drawings is due to the fact that the opening 18 forms a shouldered abutment 23, which affects upward movement of the yarn. The disks 12 it will be noted can by mere inward m0veuu-nt ol the rod 10, be moved to any posilion along the shaft, where they will be ell'mlirely held in the notches of the rod and shaft by the tension exerted by the 95, spring rod 10, and it will. further be a parent. thsl any number of disks may h e plat-r n the shalt, by simple notching of the ruer'and the spring rod, to accommodal: the number to be used.
lu some looms it is not necessary to em ploy U-shaped brackets 2. other formations being permissible.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 105 l:|lent;--
'l. in combination with a loom frame, a
pair of inverted U-shaped brackets secured .the means just men- 70 thereto, a horizontal adjustable arm carried by each bracket, a bearing plate secured to each arm, a shaft carried by said plates, a
- pulley on one end of the shaft, a strap con- .nected to one side of the pulley and to the jack, a second strap connected to the oppo site side of the pulley, a coiled spring condisks on the shaft formed with a ertures to receive said rod and shaft, said disks having openings which provide shouldered abutments and rims and each further. having a central yarn aperture in the rim thereof; I
2. The combination with a loom, a shaft, disks on the shaft formed to each engage a air of cords, spring means to "hold the dis on the shaft, and means for imparting alternating rotary movement to said shaftwhereby to alternately raise said cords to the surface of the goods to be Woven into the same.
3. In combination with a loom, a shaft, means to impart alternating rotary movement to said shaft and a series of spring held devices adjustable on said shaft each formed to engage a plurality of cords and to alternately move same to a position for Weaving into the goods by raising and lowering the cords. v
4. In combination With a loom, a shaft,
means to impart alternating rotary move- 5 shaft and rod to engage' in the notches thereof, and means to actuate the shaft.
6. In a loom, a shaft, a spring rod carried by the shaft, and a plurality of yarn engaging elements formed to receive said shaft and rod and to be held in frictional engagement therewith by virtue of the tension exerted by said spring rod.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
