MATTEO L. DALPEZ. OF TELLURIDE, COLORADO.
CUSPIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
Application filed October 12. 1912. Serial No. 725,494.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Ma'r'rno L. Danrnz, a subject of the Emperor of AuStria-I'Iungary, residing at Telluride, in the county of San Miguel and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cuspidors and more par ticularly to a cuspidor provided with means to prevent the contents thereof from being spilled as said cuspidor is tilted or upset from any direction.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a plurality of gravity valves, one of which is adapted to be seated (er the opening in the cnspidor when the same is tilted or upset and a still further objectof the invention resides in pivotally mounting said valves in such a position in the cuspidor as to allow one of the same to form a retaining means for the other valve forming a closure for the opening when the device is upset.
Still another object of the invention rcsides in the provision of a devige which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough as seen on line 2-2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a verti- 'cal section through the device showing the same in upset position.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a substantially cylindrical cuspidor formed of the upper and lower sections 2 and 3 respectively, said sections being threaded together as shown at 4 and the top 5 of the cuspidor is inclined toward the axial center of the device as usual, and
provided with a central opening 6.
Hinged to the inner wall of the cuspidor innnediately adjacent the top 5 thereof and spaced equally from one another therearound, is a trio of arms 7, the lower free ends of which are bent inwardly as shown at S and have secured thereto, the hemispherical weighted membcrs 9. Each of the arms 7 is of such length that when the same is swung inwardly toward the axial center of the device, the hemi-spherical weight member 9 thereon is adapted to fit tightly in the opening 6 to form a closure or valve therefor, and a rubber washer or the like 10 provided on the peripheral edge of this opening (3 to allow these weighted valve members 9 to contact therewith without undue noise.
It will be understood that but one weight member 9 may be seated over the opening 6 to form a closure or *alve therefor, but when the device is tilted so that one of said members is in such position, another of the weight members is adapted to rest on the last mentioned weight member to retain the latter in its position over the opening.
In practice. the lower section 2 will first be filled with water or any other liquid matter and the upper section securely engaged therewith and in the normal position of the device, as shown in Fig. l of the drawing, the arms 7 hang downwardly against the inner face of the wall thereof. Should for any reason whatsoever, the device be tilted or entirely upset from any direction. at least two of the gravity or weighted valve members 9 will drop toward the axial center of the device, one of said members actually covering, the opening 6 and the other falling on the last mensplashed through the opening at the time of tilting and cannot flow therefrom at the complete upsetting of the device.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this what I claim is A cuspidor of the class described comprising a cylindrical body member provided with the usual inclined top, said top having a central opening therein, a plurality of arms hingedly engaged at their upper ends with the wall of said body immediately adjacent the top thereof, the lower ends of said arms being extended below the plane of the opening in said top and bent inwardly toinvention,
ward the axial center of the device, anc hemi-spherical weight members mounted 01 the inwardly bent ends of said arms, one 0 said weight members being adapted to be seated over the opening in the top when said body is tilted and another of said weight members being adapted to rest on the last mentioned weight member in this position of the body to retain the first mentioned weight member in position over the opening. In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
