Be it known thatI, ROLLIN D. PARDEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrettsville, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Account-Registers, of which the following -is a specification, reference being had vtherein to the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings-1 represents as an en- 5 tirety, a casing or housing.l As this casving or housing, in itself, forms no part of my invention, it may be of any well lmown construction. For the purpose of illustration, I have shown it comprising a base 2 on which 0 is arranged a desk-like structure, having a hinged top 3', arranged to permit access to the interior of the desk-like part. The rear part of the top of the desk at 3" is preferably stationary and forms a supporting 5 base for the bill carrying frames and their supports. Each intermediate link is pivotally connected at itsupper end to the upper end of one of the arms'213 as indicated at 19; to the next arm 13. in the series intermediate of its ends, as indicated at 19', and to the lower end ofthe next arm 13 in the series as indicated at 20,-these links 14 forming with the said arms`13 a lazy tongs connection between the bars 12. This lazy tongs connection permits the lateraland vertical movement of the base bars of the series relative to each other, at the same time insuring the equal relative move' ment of the supports as entireties.

The bill carrying frames 7 may be piv! otally mounted upon their respective sup" `ports 1l in any suitable manner, and for this purpose I have shown each of the arms 13 provided with an inwardlyy turpedlpivot or stud 21, similar in construction 4to those shown in my aforesaid patent. These studs may be formed separately or integrally with the arms 13 of the supports, as desired.

the coil of which is arranged to surround one of the pivots 21 on a support 1l from the said coil one end of the wire extends vsubstantially horizontally andis secured to the horizontal edge of the adjacent lower corner of the leaf, and the other end eX- of counterbalance springs 23, one arranged' at either side of the frame and having a coiled. portion surrounding the pivot 2l on which the adjacent corner of the bill holding frame isv mounted. Each of these eounterbalance springs has one end/extending downwardly as indicated at 2aL and seated in a recess 25 in the top of the adja` cent bar 12, andan upwardly extending arm 26 normally pressing against the front wall of the frame, the construction being similar to that shown in my aforesaid. pat.` ent. i

In order to properly position and hold the bill carrying frames andtheir supports 1l in operative positionand relation in the casing l, I have arranged on the base 3, a plurality of bifurcated studs or rests 27, each adapted to receive -between its arms the bar l2 of the front support 1l of the series. It desired, ,each of the supports 11 may he independently `supported from the base 3, although this is not absolutely essential, but for the purpose ot'illustration I have shown a (pair ot stepped rests 29, one'arranged at either side of the base 3a, and upon the corresponding steps of which,

when the front and rear supports l1 are arranged in position inthe frame, the opposite ends ot the intermediate bars 12 of the series rest respectively.

The operation of a register embodying my invention will be readily understood.

Vhen the supports for the bill holding frames and the said trames then'iselves are arranged in operative position Within the casing, l, the upper ends of thebill holding frames appear o-ne above the other in ascending series'so as to expose freely to view the index tabs not shown at the upper edges of the frames and sutlicient distance separates the lowerv pivoted ends of adjacent bill holding frames to insure the ready and tree operation of each and all of the said frames in swinging from a vertical to a horizontal position or vice versa. lVhen it is desired to remove the frames from the casing for the purpose of storing them in a safe or vault for safe keeping, all that is necessary7 is to elevate the supports 11 until the lowrrmost one and the uppermost one are tree from their respective supporting connection between the supports.

To those skilled in the art of making account registers, many aiterations in construction aiid widely differing embodiments and applications ol' niv invention will suggest themselves, without departing troni the spirit and scope thereof.

My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative, and are vnot intended "to be in any sense limiting? lVhat I claim is:

l. An account register comprising a series of bill holding frames, pivots tor said frames atthe lower ends thereof, and means connecting adjacent pivots of adjoining leaves together, said means being constructed to permit bodily movement et said bill holding trames both laterally and longitudinallyrelatively to each other and the oscillation of said frames about the axes of their respective pivots, singly or in groups.

2. An account register comprising a plurality of bill holding trames having pivotal mountings for each frame one behind the other in series, and means connecting each of said frames to the adjacent frames in the series to permit the bodily lateral and longitudinal movements of the said bill holding iframes relatively to each other as well as their oscillation about the axes ot their respective pivots.

13. In a device of the character described, the combination of a series of frames providedw'ith means for retaining papers. thereon, and means for connecting the frames together and permitting them to be adjusted toward and from each other, the said means comprising links arranged at theopposite sides ofthe frames and movable relatively to each other and pivots between` the frames and said links permitting said frames to swing relatively to each other, and independently'of each other. f

14..An account register comprising a plurality of bill holding frames arrangeable for operation with their freeen'ds in stepped re`- other and of lation `to each other, and devices pivotallyA supporting and connectingiadjacent frames together in aseries in such manner that said frames are free to oscillate about the axes of their respective pivots singly or in groups, the said devices being constructed to permit bodily lateral and longitudinal movements of the frames relatively to each other, whereby said frames may be bodily separated from each other and arranged with their free ends in stepped relation for operation or may be arranged in a compactrectangular form.
