Be it known that we, WILLIAM BENNING- TON and JACOB Gnnzsunaosan, citizens of the United States, and residents of the'city of Chicag county of Cook, and State of.
Illinois, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Portable Milling- Tools, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to portable milling tools and more specifically to a device of this character designed especially for use in dressing rivet heads.
The object of 'our invention is the production of a device of the character mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction, one which it will be safe to manipulate, and one which will be of in use; I
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view, our invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed. I

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a substantially cylindrical body 1 which is mounted upon a shank 2, the tapering inner end of said'shank removably engaging a tapering socket 3 formed for the reception thereof in one end of said body. A transversely extending opening 4 is provided in the body 1, which intersects with the bottom of socket. 3, into which a key or other suitable tapering tool may be inserted of a milling for effecting ready forcing of the shank 2 1o disengagement, as will be readily understood. This beingso, it will be seen that adjustment of the depth of the cut bythc cutters will be effected by longitudinally adjusting the position of the member 18 relative to said cutters and hence relative to the sleeve 11 which is fixed against longitudinal move ment relative to said cutters. Adjustment of the member 18, as above referred to, is efiected by rotating the sleeve 1.]. relative to the member 16 and hence said member 18, it being clear that upon rotation of the member 11, the member 16 and hence the member 18, by virtue of the threaded connection between the members 11 and 16, will be moved longitudinally. One end of the member 11 is formed with radially extending perforations 20 into which the point of a tool may be inserted for efiecting this rotation of the mem- The member 16 and hence the member 18 are locked in positions of adjust nient relative to the member 11 by means of a. lock-nut 21 which is threaded upon the latter for engagement with one extremity of the member 16. The nut 21 is provided with recesses 22 into which the point of a tool may be inserted for effecting this rotation thereof. With the arrangement set forth, it will be seen that upon the member 16 having been adjusted upon the member-11, the nut 21 will be moved into engagement with the former to securely lock the same in the desired position. The member 18 formed with openings 23 through which the cutters and the work operated upon may be viewed when the tool is in operation, said openings also affording access to the heads of screws 10 for adjusting the cutters 8. The member 18 in addition to serving as a gage, as above set forth, also serves in the capacity of a guard, it being clear, that saidmember, as arranged, will be adapted to prevent the fingers or hand of the operator contacting with the blades dur ing operation of the device.
Interposed between the sleeves 11 and 18 is a third sleeve 24 in which the body 1 is rotatably mounted, the latter being locked against longitudinal movement in said sleeve by reason of the forward extremity of said sleeve engaging the head 5 and the opposite extremity of said sleeve engaging a shoulder 13 formed upon the collar 13. The sleeve 24 is formed with longitudinally extending elongated slots 25-to provide clearance for the posts 17 of the gage carrier 16, and a substantially rectangular slot 26 is provided in the sleeve 24 to alford access to the locknut 21 in rotatably z'idjusting the same. The rearward end of the sleeve 24- is formed with a slot 27 which is adapted for registration,
with the heads of screws 14; in order to gain access to the latter for attaching or detaching the collar 13, and the opposite end of said sleeve is formed with an oil hole 28 for lubricating purposes.
In using the tool, the outer end of the shank 2 is secured in the holder in conjunction with which the tool is used, the power shaft which is connected with the holder being preferably of the flexible type so as to permit of free manipulation of the tool. The sleeves 18 and 24 are then engaged by one or both hands, said sleeves thus constituting a grip whereby the tool may be pressed into engagement with the work which it is desired to dress. Since the members 18 and 24 serve in the capacity of a grip, the outer surfaces thereof are knurled so as to prevent slipping.
A tool of the construction set forth is simple and economical, hence may be manu factured at a low cost,.the same may be readily manipulated to effect the expeditious dressing of bolt heads or the like, and the construction is such to readily becoming inoperative. The cutters 8 are removable so that cutters of different sizes may be used if desired.
"While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to thecxact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and i'nodilications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Patent, 1s:
1. A tool of the character described comprising a substantially cylindrical body; a plurality of cutters arranged at one end of said body; a sleeve in which said body is rotatably mounted; means for holding said body against longitudinal movement in said sleeve; means connected with and longitudinally adjustable upon said sleeve for gaging the depth of the cut of said cutters; and rotatable manually adjustable means for securing said gaging means in positions of longitudinal adjustment relative to said sleeve, substantially as described.
2. A tool of the character described comprising a substantially cylindrical body; a plurality of cutters arranged at one end of said body; a sleeve in which said body is rotatably mounted; means for holding said body against longitudinal movement in said sleeve; a second sleeve encircling said first mentioned sleeve for gaging the depth of the cut of said cutters; means carrying said second mentioned sleeve and in screwthreaded connectionwith said first mentioned sleeve whereby rotation of said means upon said first mentioned sleeve efi'ects longit-udinal adjustment of said second mentioned vsleeve upon said first mentioned sleeve; means for locking said secondmentioned sleeve in positions of adjustment relative to said first mentioned sleeve; and a third sleeve interposed between said before mentioned sleeves and in which said body is rotatably mounted and held againstlongi' tudinal movement, scribed.
9. A tool of thecharacter described coinsubstantially as depri'singa substantially cylindricalbody; a
shank engaging a tapering socket provided in one end of said body, there being a transversely extending opening in said body intersecting said socket for the insertion of a key in effecting detachment of said shank;
a plurality of cutters arranged at'the other end of said body; and means constituting a grip substantially completely inclosing said body and in which the latter is rotatably mounted I and held against "longitudinal movement;- substantially as described.
