CUTTER HEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ap '25, 1.922.
Application filed March 31, 1919, Serial No. 286,282. Renewed March 8, 1920. Serial N0. 364,247.
To all whom it mag/concern:
vBe it known that we, FRANKLIN L. LANE and FRANK R. lVEAvnR, citizens of. the
United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock andv State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter Heads, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wood-working machinery and to cutter heads of the type disclosed in ourco-pending application Serial No. 184,137, and has particular reference to the'provision of a peculiarly efficient mounting for the peripheral tools of a cutter head, although adaptable for use in the mounting of the tools-upon aside face.
In order that the invention may be readily vUIIdGIStOOCl by'those skilled in the art, a preferred embodiment of the same is set forth in the: accompanying drawings and in the description based thereon. As, however, the
invention is susceptible of embodiment in .other and varied constructional forms depending upon the material and the nature of I the work to be performed, the drawing and description'are to be taken in an illustrative and not in an unnecessarilylimlting .1 sense. In the drawings- "Fig. 1- is a fragmentary side elevation ofga cuttenhead adapted to the mountingofthe invention; 5 r Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section in the plane of the cutter head taken through the mounting of the invention; i
;Fig. 3 is an edge view of Fig. 2 from the posit-ion indicated by thelines3-3; and p Fig.4 is a 'detailperspective view of the gib, employed.
Havlng particular reference tothe drawing, the cutterhead 11 is herein shown as @provided in its side facewith the same provision for mounting the side cutting tools q 27- within which the collar plays.- llhe ends shown in our co-pending application above knivesfand indicated by the reference numeral 13, theedge face of the cutter head is provided with a slot 1 1 which is preferably disposed at an oblique angle to theradius of ,the head or to the face thereof and. also at i an oblique angle to the plane. of retation of the head. .This slot extends for a limited dis similar tool.
vtance below the surface andis intendeol fo'r the reception of the tool. 13 and for the gib 15. Asthe gib isnot always employed, the
tated by convenience and economy, renewah.
sharpening, etc. They cooperate as onepiece with the clamping devices hereinafterto be described.
Alongside the slot 14 and substantiallyparallel therewith is a preferably cylindrical --bore 16, one curved side of which-cuts thev slot 1 1. This bore 16 extends somewhat deeper than the slot 14 and may beprojvided with theconical bottomportionl'i. v
The. second preferably cylindrical bor 18' is providedin the cuter head perpendicular-to and intersecting the bore 16 or equivalently connected therewith by the restricted cylindrical angularly adjustable plug or seat'mem'ber 19 provided with a transverse aperture 20 which is interiorlyv screw continuation of the bore '16 re'presented threaded. Within the bore 16;,is;mountedc* a screw plug 21 having itsthre'aded portion --entering the threaded aperture 20 of the plug119 and provided with asquared head for operation by means of a wrenchpr screw plug 21 is a collar 22 cut away at R-otatably disposed upon the,
operation "with a 'similar-beveled wedge face 241 of the gib 15. The'screw bolt'21 is provided with a shoulderedfportion 25 bearing -1:
downwardly upon the col'lar.22'andthe gib 15 is provided with positioning portions26 providing therebetween a recessed portion of the gib115 or, when used inconnection with} a tool 13 arranged obliquely to the plane of rotation, that end of the gib adjac essedor cut away at.- 28 toprovide clear .100 -cent the leading end of; the tool 13 is reance space for the chips, cooperating in this regard with the ,recessedportion' 29 on the side face of the cutter head.
.i It is a common experience that when the cuter head and its tool mountin have been S in use iorseine time the threadfi connection between the adjusting set screws and the cutter head become worn and inefiicient; also that bits of metal or wood or other foreign matter dropinto the threaded aperture for the bolt and prevent proper seating of the set screw and, becoming jammed therein,
are difiicult of removal; also the laying out of the slot, the threaded bores for the set screw, the beveled coacting surfaces of the set screws and gibs or tools, and other cooperating constructional features, if faulty in any respect, result in an inaccurate hearing of the one part upon another and consequent impairment of the mounting. To guard against such difficulties and to render innocuous slight irregularities in construction, has been an important consideration in the devising of the present mounting. It will be observed that providing a threaded plug 18 for cooperation with the screw bolt 21 enables such threaded plug to be renewed as often as may be desired in order to preingwedge-bearing surfaces between itself andthe gib 15. The difficulty of tapping the bottom of a deep bore within the cutter head is obviated, the general construction is simplified and rendered practically immune from carelessness and inaccuracies on'the part of workmen,
We claim: 7
