FLEXIBLE rmn-nnsrs'rms SHUTTER Alvi) sLA'r enumeran.
To all whonit may concern.'
Be it. known that I, EDWARD H. llioCLoUn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin Vand State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Flexible Fire-'- Resisting Shutters and Slats 1`herefor, .of which the following is'via specification.` l The object. of this invention is to provide an improved construction of slat for the manufacture of flexible shutters or curtains and a shutter or curtain that shall be stro-ng andV durable and shall resistfii'e and shed water. i
The invention consists inthe constructions hereinafter described and claimed.
inthe accompanying drawings showingembodiments of the invention- Figure `l is a vertical transverse section of a slat with the connected portions, of tWofsirnilai"slats; Fig. 2 shows a. slat made of tubular form vwith a similar joint connection and Water-i shedding construction; Fig. 3 isa View similar to Fig. 1 but on a smaller scale and showing end locks-applied; Fig. 4 is a pro jection, in elevation, from Fig. 3, looking to theleft at Fig. 3.
ln Figs. 1. 3 and t the slat is indicated as formed out of a strip of sheet metal. The outer tace of the body 5 of the slat iis vertical and the upper edge or margin is bentin a direction somewhat inclined to the horizontal, as seen at. 5, and formed with a. substantially cylindrical roll 5b const-itat ing a hinge member. The lovveLedge .0r margin of the body of the strip is shown to be bent in a direction substantially varallel i tothat. ofthe bent upper edge, asyseen at 5, and With a roll 5d of cylindricallcont-our` n constituting a. hinge member, the l:y ter be` ingsomewhat open at its inner sid to permit flexing of the shutter or curtain att-he joint. Both the inclined portions 5"L and 5 project from the same side of the slat and the slats Varejoinedlby slidingr oney length- Wise i'nto another, the roll 5b fit-ting within the roll 5d. When theA slats are thus joined they can rock lfreely with reference to each` other or to the extent permitted by the contact of the inclined portions 5 and 5c of connected slats. The said inclined portgons constitute shoulders taking` Vertical thrust fand 4because of the considerable extent ot Specification ein Letters Patentu,

edges'n and 5 therefore makes a vvater- The lend lock (shown' more particularly in Figss3 and 4) comprises ahead 6 hav` ing an outline that projects beyond the ont- 'line 'of a slat and the joints of two conneet-ed slats so as to form a bearing to prevent wear of the slats in running in guiding channels. The end lock also includes a shank 6a for securing it to the body of the Slat, rivets 7 being employed for the'purpose. The end locks can be applieclto'the opposite ends of alternate slats when in the shutter orcurtai-n and they will prevent undu' longitudinal movement of Athe slats on eati other.
o form the tubular Slat shawn in Fig'. 2' I genre between the inclinedly-extending ed es 5" and 5c of a strip vbent in the man ne |shown in Fig.`1 aseeond strip of sheet meal bent'at its upper edge and provided witi a roll 8 litting Wit-hin the roll 5, and
'bent at itslower edge to engage the upper side oliV the inclined. portion-at the .lower edge 02E the strip. In the tubular Slat vthus formed there can be inserted a strip or filling of wood 9 or other material preferably of light weight adapted to retard radiation and conduction of heat. i Jforming' the tubular slat are shown to be parallel but the construct-ion in this particular can be modified as can other features within the scope of the invention. i
The form of joint herein showt; and described notl only eliectually sheds Water, but with the `same width of shoulder as compared with a horizontally standing joint the axis of the hinge is located nearer-the plane of the face of the slat. The shut-ter or curl tain, therefore, rolls more compactlyon a 100 curtain constructed of a strip of metal hav- 105 ingr its main or body portion 'standing verti. -cally and its edges bent upwardly and par# allelly therefrom in asdirection inclined to the horizont-al, said edgesl being Ifurther bent.
The vertical Walls vto form rolls each constituting; a hinginfz lll member, combined witlran added strip offset, Alroinfthe firstv lnentioneid strip and bent :it its lowel edge to fit in the acute angle :it the lower portion of said `strip and engaged at its upper edge with the bent edge of the upper portion of the first mentioned strip substantially as described. 4
A tubulaislat for n flexible shutter or curtain constructed of a strip of metal having its niain or lood)I portion standingh vertically and ita edgl'er; bent upwardly and parallell)r therefrom n a direct-ion inclined to the horizontal`r said edgeb` being` further bent to forni rolls constituting, aty the upper edge, :l portion of a hingingl iuelnbel and at itsl lower edge a hinging member combined with an added strip olset from the first' mentioned strip :1nd bent at its lower edge toward the first mentioned Strip to fit against the upper side of the bent portion of that` strip, and at its upper edge doubled with the roll at the upper edge of the first. mentioned strip to complete the hingingr nuniber at that `edge of the slut', Substair tiall) u deslfribed.
