Specification of Letters Patent.
Application'filed June 5, 1911. Serial No. 631,427.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
To all whom it may eoncern:
Be it known that I, Hans HAUGNEs, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Garrison, in the county of McLean and State of NorthDakota, have invented a new and usefuFSpring Drill-Eye, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements-in what may be termed drill or tool cable attaching devices.
The invention has for its object to provide for relieving the device, including its actutoward circumstances or conditions.
A further object is to allow the tool. or
drill to have a resilient action in performing the boring or drilling operation, especially in actuatin the drillor tool from, or with a steel ca le. i
A still further object is to provide for securing an effective andsubstantial connection between the tool or drill and its actuating cable and to insure the ,tool or drill receiving a turning action. for suitably effecting the boring or drilling operation.
A still further :object is to carry out the aforesaid ends in a simple, expeditious and tails of the construction and. arrangement of" the parts without departing from the spiriteffective manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as the claims. In the accompanying hereinafter fully disclosed and defined in drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of myinvention,
wherein it will'be understood that various changes may be made as relates to the deof the invention: Figure 1 is an elevational view of the device. Fig. 2 is a like elevation viewing the device in a direction at right angles to the point of view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 '1s a sectionalv elevation of the device. Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sections thereof as produced upon the lines 44 and 55, of
Figs. 1 and 2, respectively, viewing in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the figures by characters-of reference 1 designates a tool engaging member having one end portion broadened, as
' at 6, and provided with slightly concaved sides converging toward the free end of the .member 1 so as thus to .cons't'itutea wedge.
Fitted upon the opposed concave faces of the wedge 6 are the thickened lower'ends stantially uniform in width, as will be. apparent by referring to Fig. 2,'and each having a flat inner face and a rounded outer face. Those .ends of the guide strips 2 remote from the thickened ends 13 are formed .with enlargements; 10. constituting abutmentsfor atiering 9 which, as shown, is provided with "diametrically opposed sp'ac ing lugs 11 extending between the enlarge- 13 of guide strips 2,these strips being subments 10. Another tie ring 8 is mounted on the guide strips 2 close to the thickened portions 13 and mounted on the guide members 2 is acoiled spring 7 the ends of which bear against the rings 8 and 9 respectively.
A flat bar 3 is slidably mounted between the guide members 2 and between the lugs -l1, this bar being provided at one end with an eye 1 or the like while its other end is provided with oppositely extending ears 12 projecting beyond the thickened portions 13 and under the tie ring 8.
In assembling the parts of the device, the
' guide strips 2 are placed opposite to each other with their flat faces in contact .Whereupon the thickened portions l3thereof can be inserted successively through the ring 9, spring? and ring 8. Thisis obviously permissible in view of the fact thatthe combined thickness of the portions 13 is less than" the internal diameters of the rings 9 and 8 and ofthe spring 7 The lugs 11 are.
inserted between the enlargements 10 so as to hold the strips 2 properly spaced after which bar 3 is inserted longitudinally successively into ring 8, spring 7, and ring'9 so as to bring the wings or cars 12 against the ring 8. The laststep followed in assembling the partsis the insertion of the wedge 6 between the thickened portions 13, this wedge being secured to said thickened po-r-' tionsby' transverse bolts 5. Thus it will be seen that-all of the parts are fixedly connected and cannot become accidentally displaced as the result of any jolting to wh ch the device may be subjected. Spring 7 acts as a cushion, permitting relative movement of the guide strips 2 and the bar 3, itbeing obvious that when the strips 2 move downwardly relative to the bar 3, the ring 9 and enlargements 10 will move with the strips 2 and thus compress spring 7 against the rmg ,8. The wedge-6 of course holds the lower portions of the side strips 2 properly spaced so that they will not bind to an objectionableextent upon the bar 3. The upper ends of the side strips are held against objectionable binding by the lugs 11.
-the rings, said spacing lugs projecting between the enlargements, a flat bar slidable between the guide strips and between the' lugs, there being oppositely extending ears upon the bar and bearing upwardly against one of the tie rings, a tool engaging member, and a Wedge-like anember carried thereby and extending between and secured to the guide strips, said guide strips having thickened ortions which, when spaced apart by the wedging members, cooperate with the enlargements on the guide strips to hold the tie rings against withdrawal from the guide strips.
2. A device of the class described including spaced tie rings, spacing lugs upon one of the rings, a coiled spring interposed be tween and bearing against the rings, guide strips each having an enlargement at one end and a thickened portion at its other end, said strips being movable in contact and insertible, while in contact, through the rings and spring, a bar slidable between the strips, means on the bar for engaging one of the rings, the lugs on the other ring, constituting means for holding the guide strips spaced at one end to preventthe withdrawal of said end from the tie rings, a tool engaging member, and a spacing member carried thereby and insertible between the thickened port-ions of the guide strips to-hold said portions spaced apart to prevent their withdrawal from the rings, said wedging mem- .ber and thickened portions being secured together. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
