COMBINED BRAID-HOLDER AND BODKIN-CARRIER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWIN M. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new I and useful Improvement in Combined Braid-Holders and Bodkin-Carriers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a. part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a combined holder for braid, tape, ribbon, cord, etc., and carrier for a bodkin so arranged as to present-the following advantage of retention of the bodkin in such position that it may be readily removed and replaced, as well as the advantage of application of the bodkin to the carrier .in such position and in such relation to the braid that the braid will, upon removal of the bodkin, be automatically threaded thereto. The invention is applicable to holders that are also receptacles, as well as to holders in the form'of spools, reels, cards, etc. Where the invention is applied to receptacles, the latter is preferably so constructed and the bodkin so applied that such part of the tape as projects outside the receptacle will be concealed except a short length thereof that it is desirable to expose in order that the buyer or user may, withoutv disturbance of the box, be apprised of the quality and color several embodiments of my invention set of the braid.

To attain these objects I have devised the forth in the accompanying drawings and the following description and have pointed out in the claims the essential features thereof.

In one of the narrow sides of the box I provide the three slots, 0 d and e, and n front of the slot 6' I provide a projection f '(Figs. land 2) or 9 (Figs. 3 and 4). The

In front of the projection f or-g are the ears it and 1'. Each ear extends up from one edge of the side of the box and is thence bent toward the other edge. These ears are located alongopposite edges, one in advance of the other.

The braid is pulled through the slot 0, thence extends along the exposed face of the projection f extends cross wise and is of v which a bodkin is usually probox to and through the slot d, thence extends along the interior face of the box to and through the slot 6 and thence extends a 'shortdistance along the exposed face of the box, being pulled over the projection f or g.

The bodkin is may be applied to the box either by slipping the bodkin, in the .direction of its length, beneath the ears h and z and then forcing the transverse eye m or the longitudinal eye a into engagement with the projection f or g, the braid being passed over the projection before the bodkin; or the projection f or g, with the braid drawn over it, may first be forced through the eye mor eye a, and the rear of the bodkin then successively slipped under the ears i2, and 2', there being usually suflicient resiliency in the bodkin and holder to make this mode of engagement possible. The bodkin is thus held securely in place on the box and a small section of the braid b is exposed to view between the slots 03 and c. Thus the braid will be entirely concealed, if that arrangement should be preferred. It will also be understood that the braid need not be coiled in the form of a reel but may be arranged within the receptacle in any convenient way.

In Fig. 5, the invention is shown as applied to a flat card, the braid being wound about it in the usual manner. The card .is f and ears h and 2' similar to the corresponding parts of Figs.

1 and 2, and the bodkin is secured to the manner as in the structure of Figs. 1, 2 and 5. i

The invention is not limited to any particular form of holder, nor to the use therein or thereon of any particular kind of fabric, nor to the application of a bodkin of any v particular shape so long as it is adapted to cooperate with a projection and securing devices as pointed out in the claims.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is:

1. A combined holder for braid, etc. and

bodkin carrier comprising a holder adapted to contain a length of material, a braid-engaging projection on the holder adapted to engage an eye of a bodkin, and securing means arranged in front of the projection and adapted to engage the bodkin and cooperate with the projection to hold the bodkin in position.

2. A 'combined holder for braid, etc. and bodkin carrier comprising a holder adapted to contain a length of material, a braid-engaging projection on the holder adapted to engage an eye of a bodkin, and ears projecting from the holder in advance of the rojection along lines spaced apart, said ears lieing located one in front of the other and each ear having a free end overlying the holder and extending toward the line along which. the other ear projects.

3. A combined braid receptacle and bodkin carrier comprising a box adapted to contain a length of braid and having, along one side, slots through which the braid is alternately threaded in and out, a braid; engaging projection onthe outer face of the slotted side of the box and adapted to engage an eye of the bodkin, and bodkin-securing means arranged on the same face of the box in ad.-

vance of the projection and adapted to engage the bodkin and,cooperate with the projection to hold the bodkin in position.
