G. J. GREINER.
GASOLENE TANK OUTLET.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 28, 1912 Patented Feb. 25, 1913 a M w W a rangeinent of I While the ooenin 4 is GEORGE J. GREINER, 'GF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.-
IGAS OLEIlE-TANK OUTLET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Feb. i are.
Application filed Aug'uStZS, 1912. Serial No. ?17,594.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known thatI, GEORG Qi n an, a citizen of the United States. residingat Detroit, in the'county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gasolene-Tank Outlets, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention'relates to improvements in gasolene tanks employed in connection with automobiles, motorcycles," motor boats, etc. i In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide simple and effective means whereby a vehicle will be brought to a stop after a certain amount of gasolene has been fed tr0m.,the tank, in'order to warn the operator of the machine that an additional supply of gasolene is required, 1 sufiicient fluid, however. being. retained Within the tank and readily fed therefrom to propel the machine a suitable distance, as for instance to the nearest replenishing station.
With the above recited objects in view, and others which will be more apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully described, the improvement resides in the con- I struction, combination and operative arparts set forth inthe followi ing specification, and falling within the sec e of the appendediclaini. l
in the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of a gasolene tank partly broken away'and provided with my improved outlet or feed device. Fig. 2 is a similar view parts being broken away, and other. partsbeing shown in section andillustrating the manner-in which the fiuid is fed from the bottom of the tank.
Referring now to the drawing in detail the'nuineral l designates anprdinary gasolene tank, and 2 a fuel outlet pipe which is secured to the bottom of the tank and which extends both Within and below the tank. The lower extending portion of the pipe is threadedfor the reception of a suitable; valved nipple (not shown). The pipe 2 is provided with a pair of spaced openings 3 and 4 respectively. The opening 3 is arranged. adjacent the bottom of the tank, positioned a suitable distance awdy from the top of the tube 2, and also at a desirable point away. from the opening 3. The pipe 2, above the opening 4: is provided With a bayonet shot 5, the purpose of Whichas Welles that of the openings 3 and l will be presently set forth. As illustrated in the drawing the pipe 2 tQlIIlb nates a considerable distance away from the upper portion or closure of the tank 1, and the said upper portion or closure is provided with a suitable opening 6 for the reception of a hollow rod or tube 7: The outer face of the rod or in e is adapted received within the bore of the pipe 2, the frictional engagement therebetween being suilicient to prevent the leakage of the fluid from the tank, but at the same time permitting of the free lIIOVBHIGHt Of the tube within the pipe. extends through the opening 6 is provided with a head 8. The portion of the tube arranged within the pipe 2 is provided with spaced openings designated by the numerals 9 and 10 respectively. The opening 10 is adapted to co-act with the opening 4, when the parts are in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, andihe gasolene flows through the said openings and the When the parts are as set forth the opening 9 is arranged a distance below the opening 3 corresponding with the length of the bayonet slot 5, so that the fluid cannot find an outlet through the. hid openings. The tube 7 is provided with a nib or projection 11, which passes through the bayonet slot. llhen the tube 7 is in the position illustrated in Fig. l of the drawing, the opening 10 of said tube is brought into register with the pening of the pipe 2 and. the fluid finds an exit from the tank registering openings.- The openings l0 and 9 of the tube, it is to be understood, are out let the same iertical line so that the tube is not only drawn in an upward direction that its nib contacts with the upper wall of the bayonet slot, but the tube 7 must be rotated until the nib contacts with the inner wall of the angular passage of the bayonet slot before the opening 9 of the tube is brought into register with the opening 3 of the pipe. ijVhenthe level of the fluid falls below the registering openings and 10, it will be evident to the operator of the vchiclc,- through the stop 'ihge of the machine (that only a small mains within the tank, the said quantity, however, being sutlicient to propel the vehicle a certain distance, say nine or ten lllll8S;WlllC'-l1 is generally suhlcient to bringthe vehicle to a garage or supply station.
The portion of the tube which.
tube when the supply in" the tank is at a level above the said openings.
to be snugly through these quantity of gasolene re- After the stoppage of the vehicle the operator will, through the niediu n of the head 8 raise the tube 7 Within the pipe 2 to bring the opening 9 of the said tube adjacent the opening 3 of the pipe, and by partially rotating the tube, so as to cause the member 11 to engage Within the offset portion of the bayonet slot, the opening 9 of the tube will be brought into perfect alinement with the opening 3 of the pipe and the tube sustained in such position. The fluid Will then,:of course, flow through the openings 3 and 9, for propelling the machine a short distance as above set forth.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is 1 A fluid tank for the purpose set forth, provided with a pipe which extends Within the tank, said pipe being provided with an opening arranged adjacent the bottom of the tank, said pipe being provided withv a second opening disposed a distance from the first named opening, the pipe being further provided with a key hole slot, 3 tube eutends ing through the tank and frictlonaily engaging with the bpre of the pipe, said tube having its outer 'fslce provided with on er:- tension which is recei d, Within the key hole slot of the pipe, said tube being fur ther provided with an upper and a lower spaced opening, and the lower opening of the tube adapted to be brought to register with the lower opening of the pipe when the tube is moved in one direction and to cause the upper opening of the tube to be broughtout of register with the upper opening ot' the pipe, and to cause the upper opening of the tube to be brought into register with the upper opening of the pipe, and the lower opening of the tube to be brought out oi? register with the lower opening of the pipe when the tube is moved in a second or opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I oiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
