DEVICE FOR. DELIVERING MESSAGES TO MOVING TRAINS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 18, 1912.
Patented Feb. 25, 1913.
Serial No. 698,247.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnannns It. TARBE'I, a citizen of the United States of America. residing at W'ellsville, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Delivering Messages to Moving Trains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention embraces improvements in devices for delivering train orders or messages to the engineers or conductors of trains While such trains are in motion and has particular application to devices of this type which are constructed of wire or the like material and are adapted to be held in the hand of the despatcher at the station, depot or other place.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a device of the character above set forth wherein by means of a holder constructed of a single length of wire which is bent to form a loop and has a portion of such loop bent upon itself and cotiperating with the adjacent part of the material of the loop to form a clamp, a train order or other message may be securely held and delivered to a person upon a moving train, such clamp opening onto the outer periphery of the material of the loop and at a tangent thereto so as to facilitate disengaging the message from the holder for the desired purpose.
IVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a train order holder constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary View of the clamp and the adjacent part of the handle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of holder, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view, partly in section of a detail of the modified form of my invention.
Similar reference cha 'acters designate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, my improved train order holder, in the present instance, comprises a single length of wire 1 formed to provide a substantially circular or annular loop 2, one extremity of the loop being extended relatively to the opposite extremity, as at 3, and bent back upon itself as at at to provide a handle 5, the free extremity of the bent back portion being twisted about the first or extended portion, as at (i to hold the parts rigid, Theoppo site or short extremity of the loop is twisted about the extended extremity thereof, as at 7 so as to hold the loop portion of the wire in loop formation. In accordance with my invention, the loop is formed in such manner as to provide a clamp which opens onto the outer periphery of the loop and at a tangent thereto so as to enable a train order or other message to be extracted from the clamp with facility and case. For this purpose the loop at an appropriate point, preferably in proximity to the handle forming extremities, bent upon itself as at 8 thence back as at t), thence again bent as at 10 and carried forwardly at 11, the bent portions 9 and 11 lying alongside of each other and the adjacent portion of the loop to provide a clamp which as shown opens onto the periphery of the loop and tangentially thereof.
In the modified form of the invention, shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the free extremities of the loop are twisted one about the other as at 12 and one of such extremities is relatively long as compared to the other and turned upon itself to provide a spring lat terminating in a contiguous yieldable finger 15 having an inturned end 16. In this form of the invention, the handle is made of wood or the like material and is indicated at 17 and has one end socketed as at 18 and into this socketcd end of the handle are disposed the free extremities of the loop, the yieldable finger 15, under the action of the spring 14, engaging the adjacent portion of the wall of the socket to secure the train order holder to the handle, as will be obvious.
It will be noted that the bent portions 8 and 10 of the wire of the loop forming the clamp are spaced apart at the bend.' By meansof this construction, breaking or fracturing of the wire of the clamp is avoided in the event that the wire of the clamp is spaced apart in withdrawing the message, while such spaced portions also increase the yieldable qualities of the clamp.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of employing my invention will be readily understood, and while I have herein shown and described certain preferred forms of my invention by way of illustration, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction and arrangement of parts herein described and delineated, as modification and variation maybe made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A device for delivering train orders or other messages, said device comprising a holder made of a single piece of wire which is bent to form a loop, the free extremities of the loop being twisted one about the other, one of said extremities being extended and turned upon itself to provide a spring,
the free end of the spring terminating 1n a finger having an inturned end, and a handle formed with a socket adapted to receive the free ends of the loop and hold the same under the action of said finger a portion of the wire forming the loop being bent upon itself and cooperating with the adjacent portion of the loop to form a clamp. In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
