Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern;
lie it "knownthat I, VIM. M. Sawvea, a citizen of the .United States, residingat Chicago, in'the county of Cook and, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown ltletallic Structures, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention refers in general to knockdown metallic structures, and particularly to the smaller buildings of that class that are especially appropriate for use throughout the farming districts for smokehouses, tool-sheds, and constructions of similar nature whose use is only required for a portion of the year.
I aim to produce a building that may be readily set up and taken down by unsltllled laborers, and one which may be stored with but small chance of any of the parts being lost.
A further object of my invention is to produce a structure of the kind described which will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and which will possess exceptional strength and durability.
Further aims and advantages will appear as my invention is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connection with the drawings illustrate one preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a structure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 8-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4-& of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line 5-5 of l ig. 1, showing details of the means of connecting two side walls together. Fig. 6 is an enlarged vertioal section showing the .means-of locking the roof members, the stiffening member and the side wall together.
Referring to the drawings, the structure embodies the front wall 10, the rear wall 11, and the two side walls 12. These walls may be either made of a single sheet of metal or they may be formed of a plurality of vertically disposed sheet metal sections 13. The vertical edges of the front-and rear walls 10 and 11 are bent outwardly to form the flange 14 substantially at right angles to the plane of the said walls. These vertical edges are then further rolled back upon themselves to slightly less than one circumference, forming thereby on either side of the said walls, a vertical cylindrical roll 15. The two side walls have their edges bent inwardly to form the flanges 16 substantially at right angles to the plane of the said walls, the vertical edges of said walls beingthcn rolled back upon themselves to form the cylindrical rolls 17. The inwardly disposed rolls 17 are thus adapted to slip over and embrace the outwardly disposed rolls to connect the side walls 12 to the front and rear walls 10 and 11 by merely disposing the rolls 15 within the rolls 17.
The side walls 12 and the rear wall 11 are each provided with a horizontal flange 18 formed at the bottom of the structure by bending outwardly the lowermost edges of the said walls. The said flanges 18 have riveted beneath them thereto, the stiffening members lD formed of strips of metal having one edge 20 bent to embrace the said flange and the other edge 21 bent to form a roll within the construction.
The front wall 10 is formed of two vertically disposed side members .22 which are. connected together at the top by the sheet metal member .23 and at the bottom by themember 24, saidmembers being riveted to the vertical sections 22. A door is fastened to one member 22 by a plurality of hinges 2G and is adapted to be loclted to the other member 22 by the latches 27. The member .23 is provided with a tongue 28 between the vertical sections 29.. The said tongue is bent to form the inwardly disposed flange 29 and has its edges bent uiwardly to form the lip 30 'n-oviding the channel 31 between the said lip and the said member 23. The n per edge of the member 23 is bent outwardl y to form the flange 32 substantially in the plane of the roof and is provided with the lip 33 forming one side of a channel 34 above the channel 31. In the member .23 are provided the ventilating apertures 34 adapted to be closed by the slide which is movable back and forth along the channels 34 and 31. member; 24, isfurther provided with theaperture 43 for the reception of fuel which is adapted to be closed'by the slide 44; moving in the channels 39and 42. The bottom edges' of" the vertical sections QQ'are bent outwardly to form the{horizontalflanges45.
A'stiflenmg member 46' is fastened tothe bottom'of saidjflanges ifi and to theflange '40 of the member 24, said stiffening member being 'co'mpos'ed of a=metal-sheet having-one end 47 bent'to embrace said outwardly disposedflanges 45 and 40 and-the other edge )ent to form a roll 48 within-the construction. The vertical sections .22 have their adjacent edges '49 bent inwardly between the members 23-and' ,Z-L to form the vertical flanges 50, terminating in the turned back lips 51.
; The rear wall 11 is provided with a stiffening member 52 formed of a strip of metal having one edge rolled back uJon itself to form the roll 53 and the other edge 54 riveted to the said wall 11 by means of the rivets The side walls 12 are provided with stiffening members 56 of similar construction formed of the rolled back portions 57 and having the flat edges thereof 58 riveted to the walls 12 by the rivets 59 adjacent to the top of said walls. The side walls'12 are provided with hanger supports (30, each hanger support bein formed of a lateral member having one e ge (31 riveted to the walls 12 and the'other edge 62'bent to support a plurality of transverse hanging means 62-3, said means being composed of a sheet of metal rolled'back upon itself to form a spiral roll, said spiral roll being flattened at its ends (54 to form hooks to engage the upturned edge 62 of the hanger support 60.
The upper edge of the walls 11 and 12 and the sections 22 of the walltlO are bent outwardly to form the flanges 64, said flanges being substantially in the same plane. The. stiffening members (55 are riveted to the flanges 64, said members having one edge 66 bent to embrace the flanges 64 and the other edge turned back upon itself to form the roll (57 within the construction, theinnermost extremityof said roll being bent radially inward to form the'flange 68.
Two roof members 69 are adapted to slide inwardly from the sides 12 and to this end, are provided with the downwardly disposed flange 'TO and the horizontallfia'nge 71 formed by'bending'the ends 72 of the said members 69 and' the sides/73 downwardly and-back upon themselves-to form the flange and inwardly to form the horizontal upon and adapted to engage the turned back edges of the members (39' withinthe under turned edgesTG by sliding the member 75 from the frontofthe structure to the rear. The locking member 75 is bent downwardly at the front'cnd thereof at 77 and returned upon itself, terminating in the rearwardly projecting-lip 78 adapted to engage beneath the flange 32 and the stiffening member 6."). The said interlocking member 75 is provided at its rearward extremity with the portion 79 which, when the said interlockng member is in position, may be bent.

It will be seen that the structure after it has left the factory may be assembled withoutthe use of any bolts or rivets or, in fact, any auxiliary agencies whatever, it being only necessary to slide the rolls at the edges of the side walls one within the other, place these side walls in a vertical position, slide in from the two opposite sides the roof members and lock them in position by means of the locking member which in sliding'into position binds the various parts intoone homogeneous whole. It is ony necessary to bend down the back portion of the said interlocking member to complete the assembling of the construction.
It is understood that various changes in the form, proportion and mechanical detail of the various parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the material advantages thereof, the embodiment of the said invention, as disclosed in the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, being merely one form thereof.
What I claim is:
1. A knockdown metallic structure, comprising side walls, roof members adapted to he slid toward the center from the sides, and means embracing and locking said sections together and to the construction, said means having its ends formed to embrace the tops of the side walls when the said ends are bent downwardly.
2. A knockdown metallic structure, having side walls, roof members adapted to he slid in toward the center from the sides, and means adapted to be slid from the front toward the back to lock the said sections together in position, said means being adapted to enga e the top ofthe side walls at the front, w 1811; the said means are 'in ..'position a.
