COUNTING ATTBQHMENT FOR BOX-MACHINES.
Application filed August 20, 1912.
To (1/ trim/n- [it only com-0m lie it known that l, Finn) ill. Bnmcimnn,
a citizen of the United States, and. resident oi llanvers. in the county of Essex and State 5 of Elassarliusotls, have invented new and useful improvements in Counting -itt.acl1- ments for liox-fvlarhines, (it which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a counter controlling rneclmnisni, and more particularly to a counting attachment for box machines oi the kind in which feed rolls or presscr rolls are employed, between which the box blanks are iassed to be folded and glued. in snrh machines the rolls are journaled with provision for slight relative imn'ement of separation, and each time a box blank passes between the rolls the rolls are sepa' rated thereby.
The present invention involves the utilization of such movement of separation for the nn-pose ot' actuating the counter, to count and record the number of box blanl-zs passing through the machine.
in the act-onmarrying drawings, which illustrate one en'ibodiment of the inveni'jion.----l igure 1 is a side elevation showing such parts of a. box n'iachine of ordinary constrhctiou as are intimately associated with my invention, and also showing in side e oration the counting attaehnn-nt; and Fig. '12 a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. I viewed from the right of Fig. 1.
eferring to the drawings, A represents the frame of a box machine and B the table from which the box blanks are fed between the rolls. The frame A provided with a vertically arranged slideway (1 in which mounted a sliding block or journal box a, in which is journalctl one end of shaft 0 of a feed roll or resser roll C. A spring 8 in the slidcway a normally urges the journal box a" do nward. and jvieltlingly presses the roll C toward the other rol.
C is the lower preseer roll or feed roll, l t (3 jom'naled in fixed hearings in t Tame ii. The rolls C and. C are normally in :pltltlll'lg contactin the positions l in the drawings. .it-will be understood that there may be a series of: rolls similar to rolls C and U between which the box blanks pass, but one pair of such rolls is suliicient for an understanding of the pres ent. invention.

Serial No. 716,079.
the lower or fixed roll C. A swin ing arm C is pitgoted to the frame A at e, an mounted (:11 the tree end of the arm E is the CO11I1- ter-artuating gearl A segment of the gear 11 opposite the gear D is provided with a series of teeth f which are shorterthan the teeth about the rest of the periphery of the gear F, and are normally out of engagement with the teeth of gear D as shown in the drawings. The rest of the gear teeth of gear i are of such a length that they will engage the gear teeth of the gear D in all positions which the gear F assumes when operated as hereinafter described.
The! gear F is connected by a connecting rod G with an arm or crank /L, which opera tee the counter mounted on the frame of the machine and conventionally shown at H. The journal box a is connected with the swinging arm E by a downwardly extending rod j and a link it: pivoted to arm F. rmrision is made for adjusting the length of the connection j ir by means of adjusting nuts in into which the lower end of rod j is threaded, one not being secured at each side of an ear projecting from link It will be understood that the rolls C and C are continuously driven in. the direction indicated by the arrows, and that when no box blank or similar article is passing between them, they will be in contact with each ther shown in. the drawings. Theother parts of the apparatus will also then be in the positions shown in the drawings, with the short gear teeth f opposite the teeth of gear l and out of engagement therewith. it. now, a box blank is passed between the rolls C and C, it will causethe rolls to separate slightly by lifting the upper roll (I which is journaled on the movable axis. The movement of roll 0 will lift the journal block a, thereby lifting arm E through the connection j-/r, and moving the short gear teeth f into mesh with the teeth of gear I). Gear D, which is being continuously driven with roll C, will thereupon rotate gear F, which in turning pulls down connecting rod to and actuatee the counter once at each rotation of the gear 1 As the longer gear teeth of the gear F are sutlicient in length to engage the gear teeth of the gear D in the lowermost position of the gear F, that is, when the rolls C and C are in contact, one complete rotation of the gear F is 1nsured, notwithstanding the box blank passes in a gear, provided with ehorter teeth than those "the opposed gear in all rolati Said rolls, and .(liQt'lliUllHIll -n'iovement. ot' separation of clear of the rolls C and C, thereby permit ting the roll C again to move down into contact; with the roll C and the gear F to Swing away from gear 1), before the rotation of gear i it; completed. When the shorter giar teeth f again come oppof e the teeth of gear l), the rolls C and. t) having again come into contact by that time, the rotation of the ear F will again he stopped, and consequently the counter will not again be actuated until another hot; blank causes the rolls again to sepz sate and the short gear teeth f again to be brought into engagement'wit'h the gear I).
I claim: I
'1. In a n'ntehine of the character deseribed, a pair of rolls mounted on relatively movable axes, a counter, gear carried by one of said rolls, a counter-actuating 7 gear normally disengaged from the gear on the roll, and nieehanisn'i controlled by the movt' inent oi" separation of said rolls adaptt ed to move said gears into engagement and thereby to operate said counter:
in a machine of the character de scribed, av pair of rolls mounted on relalively movable axes, a counter, gear car ried by one of-Faid rolls, a countenactuating one of said gears having a segment on the rest of the, periphery of such gear, said shorter gear teeth being normally onposed to and disengaged from the other gear when the rolls are in contact, and the longer gear teeth being adapted to engage '13 positions of arluated by the said rolls adapt gear teeth with ed to engage said shorter and thereby opthe teeth of the other gear crate said counter.
machine of the character de- Use -ibed, a roll mounted on a movable axis, a
counter, a continuously operated gear. a
count(r-actuating gear having a segment which is provided with gear teeth shorter than those on the rest of the periphery of such gear, said shorter gear teeth being nor- 'tion, and the longer of .illltll gear n'lally opposite and disengagetil from the other gear vwhen said r ll is in normal posh v teeth adapted to engage the teeth of the oppose-1t.
gear in all positions of said movable roll, and mechanism actuated ly the displacement of said roll to more said counter-actuating gear and bring said shorter gear teeth into mesh with said eontinuomly olwlule jl gear and thereby operate the said counter. i
