BLAKESLEE, OF WATERTOWN, GONNGTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO- HIMSELF AND JOSEPH PECK, Oll SAME PLACF.
Letters Patent N 105,415, elated July 19, 1ST
IMPROVED TRAGE-FASTENING'.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thesame To all whom. it may concern:
Be it 4known that I, GHARnns WZBLAKESLEE, of Watertown, in the county'of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Trace-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is 'a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letterspf reference marked thereon.
This invention consists of an improved construction of trace-lock, the details-of which are hereinafter fully set forth. l
In the drawing- Figure 1 representsa plan view;
Figure 2, a central sectional elevation .Figure 3, a plan view'with the cover removed; and
Figure 4, a plan'view of the cover detached.
'lhis lock is composed mainly of three pieces, the piece A forming the larger part of the device. It is made by swaging orcasting, vas are the other corresponding parts.
'At thesmaller end it is constructed with a slot, a, of proper size topass over the head of the bolt in .the end ofthe whiffletree or other part. l Y
The other end is larger, and recessed, to adapt it to receive the end of the trace or other strap to which it is to be attached'. This recess extends, somewhat narrowed, to near the. extremity of the open slot, ,its sides being shownat b b, in iig. 3 ofthe drawing.: In this recess slides the piece B, formed as shown in figs. 1 and 3. Its forward end is slightly notched, to correspond to the round shank of holt or button, over which the lock passes.
The rear end is `formed with a projecting` flange, covering the spindle and spring, and is perihrated lengthwise, to receive the end ofthe said spring.
'The rod or spindle which holds the spring in place ,y is properly secured to the bottom of the open slot, or
may forni part of the metal of it.
When in place, one end of the spring rests on the rod c, and against the shoulder d, the other end heilig in the hole g, (figs. 2 and 3.)
The length of this spiral spring is such as to push the slide quite to the end of the slot.
From theupper side of the slide is a projection, h, passing through the detachable side i, and allowing the slide to be manipulated in locking the device upon its proper button.
Over the whole is placed the detachable' side or. cover t', which iits down snugly over all the parts, making the exterior smooth and uniform.
Having thus fully described my invention, v
XVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The described lock, formed of the described part-s, the main part A, with its slot a, recesses, shoulder (t with its spindle c, the slide with its socket f/ and projection 7:-, and the covert', all constructed and arranged to operate as set fort-h. a
This specification signed and. witnessed this 28th day of may, 1870.
CHARLES NV. BLAKESLEE.
