COMBINATION BLOTTER AND PENCIL HOLDER AND RULER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES E. MASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lock Haven, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combination Blotter and Pencil Holder and Ruler; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention belongs to the art of holders for stationery articles, such as pencils, pens and blotters and the like, and it particularly pertains to a combination holder adapted for holding blotters and pencils, in such wise as to permit the blotter to be used while in the holder; and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which there is in volved novel features of construction.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for securing the blotters in the holder, in order to prevent their displacement.

Another object of the invention is to provide the holder with raduation, in order to permit the same to be used as a ruler, as well as a measuring device. In utilizing the holder as a ruler, there is no fear of blotting or smearing, when using the ordinary writing pen for drawing astraight line, by

reason of the fact that the part of the holder or ruler, which is engaged by the pen, is somewhat above the surface which is being ruled. In the drawings, however, there is only one form of the invent-ion disclosed, but in practical fields this form may require slight alterations, to which the applicant is entitled, provided the alterations are comprehended by the patent protection.

Other features and combination of parts will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View of the holder, showing the same holding blotters and pencils. Fig. 2 is a view similar to the Fig. 1 showing a modified structure of means for holding the blotters in the holder. Fig. 3, is a sectional view on line -t-at of Fig. 2. "disclosing a modification to that shown in Fig. 1, for holding pencils.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates the holder which consists of a piece of sheet metal folded upon itself, to form the rolls or pencil holders 2, and to provide a double thickness of metal for the holder. In the rolls or holders 2 pencils 5 are arranged. To secure the blotters against longitudinal displacement, fastening members 6 are provided. These members 6 consist of a single length of metal bent upon itself to form the head 6 to engage the uppermost of the top blotters, while free extremities of the members 6 are bent to engage the lowermost of the lower bodies. These securing members 6 penetrate the blotters and the holder as shown in Figs. 3 and A. The rolls or holders 2 are provided with graduations 2 in order to premit the roll 2 to be used as measuring members. The holders or rolls 2 may not only be used as measuring members and pencil holders, but as rules, in the manner hereinafter set forth.

From the foregoing, it is clear that anovel combination blotter and pencil holder, comprising simplicity and eiiiciency, is provided, and one which may not only hold pencils, but pens and the like.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In a device of the kind described the combination with a holder having oppositely disposed tubular edges adapted to receive pencils; of blotting pads secured to the opposite faces of said holder between said tubular edges, said pads having their outer faces projecting beyond the planes tangent in common to both tubular edges whereby said edges are prevented from touching the surface to which either pad may be applied.

Corrections in Letters Patent No. 1,054,128.

It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 1,054,128, granted February 25, 1913, upon the application of James E. Mason, of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, for an improvement in Combination Blotter and Pencil Holders and Rulers, errors appear in the printed specification requiring correction as follows: Line 7 2, for the Word premit read pewm't; same line, for the Word roll read rolls; and that the said Letters Patent should be read With these corrections therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
