Description

UNITED STATES .PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. ANTHONY, OF CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,408, dated July 19, 1870. .p
I, JOHN H. ANTHONY, of Cambridge, Dorchester county, Maryland, have invented cers tain Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a pipe-bowl made in two parts. in the bottom of the lower one of which a sponge is placed, for the purpose of clarifying and cooling the smoke, which sponge may be taken outl and cleaned as often as necessary, a removable metal chamber resting on the sponge, and havin gaperforated top, above which is the tobacco when the bowl is-illed, said chamber containing a roll of paper that absorbs thepoisonous liquid which distils from burning tobacco, and that may be renewed as Often as it becomes foul, the top of thechamber preventing ashes from descending and clogging the stem, and obviating waste of tobacco .by keeping it in a position where it may all be burned.
In the drawing, a is the lower section of the pipe bowl; b, the upper section, which is screwed into the top of the lower one. c is the sponge, placed in the bottom of the, bowl. d
is the removable metal chamber, which rests on the sponge, is open at its bottom, and perforated at the top sufciently to allow smoke to pass through. e is the roll otl paper Within the chamber, which absorbs the liquid, and
which may be renewed from time totime as often as expedient, the bowl being made in two sections, in order that the upper one may be unscrewed when fresh paper is to be placed in the chamber, and when the sponge is to be taken out and washed, and screwed in again when these operations have been performed.
The smoke in this pipe reaches themouth cooled, and divested of every avor but the natural one of the tobacco.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a pipe-bowl with the chamber d, paper-roll e within the chamber, and sponge c in the bottom ofthe bowl below the chamber, as and for the purpose specified.
