Description
LUNA J. Annnironn, or wnnownn, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT iN Hol-1s.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,405, dated July 19, 1870.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, LUNA J. ADERHOLD, of Wedowee, in the county of Randolph, and in the State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoes; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, v,and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a hoe for cultivating corn and cotton, and for other purposes.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceedl to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view, part in section, and
Fig. 2 is a front view, oi'my hoe. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of blades to be substituted, when necessary, for the one represented in Figs. 1 and 2. v
A represents thehandle of my hoe, provided with a metal bar, a, on the upper, and
another, b, on the lower side, and also With a metal band, d, surrounding the front end, the bars a and b extending back from the front end a suitable distance.
Near the front end of the beam A there isv an elongated slot through the beam and bars a b, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l.
On the under side of the handle A is placed a metal'bar, B, provided at its rear end on the upper side with a lug, e, which ts into notches made in the bar b, and is held by a metal strap, f, surrounding the beam A.
At the front end of the bar B is a,sc rewrod, g, which extends upward through the slot in the beam A, and is fastenedbya nut, h, on top of the same.
The front end of said bar is extended downward a suitable distance, as shown in Fig. l, and itslower end is bentiorward and provided with a head, (i. It will be noticed that immediately back of the head t' the upper side of the forward-bent portion is inclined or beveled, for a purpose that will be presently described.
'Ihe front end of the bar Z, on the under side of the beam, is extended on both sides of the beam, and then bent downward, forming ears 7c 7c, which have a notch or recess cut in their lower edges, as shown. y
C represents the hoe-blade, which is of sq nare or rectangular form, with four cutting-edges, and in the center it has a slot, lm., in the shape of a cross, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of this slot are slightly beveled, but thel sides are cut square.
D represents a shield or plate laid on the front side of the blade C, and having its upper end bent so as to t over the top edge of the.
blade. In the body of the shield is a longitudinal slot, the sides of which are beveled inward, as shown in Fig. 2, and the upper end enlarged, so that the head i can pass through the same.
The head t of the bar B is passed through the cross-slot m of the blade G, and through the slot in the shield D, and the upper end of the shield placed over the top edge of the blade. rllhe shield and blade are then placed against or in the notches or recesses in the ears lc k, when, by tightening the screw-nut h, the blade is iirmly secured. The head t', bearing against the beveled sides ofthe notch in the shield I), presses the blade C upon the incline or bevel in rear of the head c', which bevel, corresponding with the .bevel at the end of the slot m, so to say, Wedges the blade tightly.
The strap f is tightened by a Wedge, E, inserted on the upper side of the beam A, said wedge having, at its outer end, jaws a u, forming a wrench for loosening or tightening the nut h.
By changing the bar B back or forth, so
that the lug e will ,enter different holes in the' .bar b, the blade O may be set in any angle desired.
In place of the blade C, I may substitute the implements G and H, constructed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
G is a combined gardenlhoe and plow, and H is a hoe to cut sprouts and shrubbery, both having a longitudinal slot, with an enlarge ment in the center.
Having thusfully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bar B, constructed as described, and
provided with lug e, screw-rod g, and head i, constructed as described, to operate substan- With an incline or bevel immediately in rear of tially as and for the purposes herein set forth. said head, and used with a hoe-handle and In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hoe7 all substantially as and for the purposes have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of herein set forth. June, 1870.
2. A four-edged hoe-blade provided with a LUNA J. ADERHOLD. central crucial slot, as shown and described. Witnesses:
3. The arrangement of the beam A, bar B, J. M. MASON,
blade C, shield l)7 band f, and Wedge E, all l C. L. EVERT.
