To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Grmnnns Moore, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmersville, in the county of Lancaster and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Fenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car fenders.
Objects of the invention are to provide a fender which will include a movably sup ported frame carrying a basket to be arranged at an angle in front of the car, the same being provided with means whereby it is normally held positioned with respect to the front of the car to form a guard to prevent injury to the person who may be struck by the car when the latter is in mot-ion, and further the provision of means whereby the basket will be capable of a movement on its impact against the person so as to positively pick up the person, thereby acting as an effective safeguard against injury to the person and preventing any possibility of the person becoming caught beneath the fender.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a car showing the fender in its applied position thereon and arranged in collecting position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the movable frame with its front portion tilted upwardly. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fender detached from the car. Fig. 4c is a horizontal section taken on the line 4.- t of Fig. 1.
The fender comprises a main supporting frame 1 which may include such side bars as those shown at 2, and the top and bottom bars 3 and 4. The side bars 2 have their inner ends extended beyond the top bar 3 and attached to said ends are hooks or attaching devices 5 which are adapted to be secured to the side longitudinal sills of the car body or to any other suitable'point upon the car. The frame extends downwardly at an angle from the front of the car, and as shown, the forward ends of the side bars 2 are provided with bearing boxes 6 in which a roller 7 is journaled and adapted to travel upon the track surface.
The movable frame 8 is shown to include a rectangular frame which comprises the side bars 9, the top and bottom bars 10 and an upwardly and outwardly extended cross bar 11 and a cross rod 12. The basket bottom may be constructed in any suitable well known manner, but as shown, it is formed from a single length of cable, rope or the like 13 which is operatively connected with the side bars 9, the top bar 10 and the cross rod 12 of the basket frame so as to present the longitudinal and transverse cross leads or portions 14: and 15.
An upwardly and outwardly extended trip or actuating bar 16 is disposed in front of the lower cross bar 11 of the movable frame, being slidably supported thereon by the devices 17. The post 18 on the side bars 2 of the frame 1 are pivotally connected, at 19, to the side bars 9 of the movable frame, the major portion of the basket being extended beyond its point of pivotal connection with the lower supporting frame so that the has ket is capable of automatic gravitation to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The locking mechanism for the basket comprises in connection with the trip bar or actuating member 16 the companion relatively movable keepers 20 and 21, the latter having its inner offset end operatively connected with the inner end of the keeper 20 through the medium of the link 22. The outer ends of the keepers are substantially cylindrical, being so designed whereby they are free to engage in or disengage from the passages 23 in the bearing boxes 6 which form a part of the fixed frame of the fender.
Rock levers 24 and 25 are mounted on the bar 11 of the movable frame. The arm 26 of the rock lever 24 is pivoted to the keeper 20 adjacent to the outer end thereof. The lever 25 has its rear end pivoted to the keeper 21 adjacent to its outer end. This construction is such that when the rock levers are simultaneously actuated the keepers 20 and 21 will be moved relatively so that the cylindrical portions of the keepers may be quickly withdrawn from the passage 23 in the bearing boxes 6, thereby permitting the movable frame to gravitate to a closed position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

The fender as described herein is extremely simple in construction and, in practice it will be understood that when the trip bar 16 strikes the person or object who may be in the path of travel of the car the keepers 20 and 21 will be immediately actuated so as to permit the basket on the movable frame to assume a position, whereby it will pick up the person or object and carry the same to a position of safety above the car tracks.
I claim A car fender comprising a fixed frame, a movable frame supported by the fixed frame and provided with a lower cross bar extend ing upwardly and outwardly therefrom, a trip bar slidably mounted on said cross bar and arranged within the plane of the same, bearing boxes on the fixed frame, a link piv otally mounted upon the upper side of the cross bar at its medial portion and of greater length than the full transverse width of the cross bar, the upper end of said link extending above and over the space between the opposed longitudinal edges of said rigid bar and trip bar, a straight keeper pivoted at its inner end to the lower end of the link and disposed throughout its entire length in rear and parallel with a portion of the rear and longitudinal edge of said bar, another keeper oppositely disposed from the former mentioned keeper and having its inner ends offset, and the ends of said keepers being adapted to engage the bearing boxes to secure the movable frame in normal position, levers pivotally mounted on the upper side of the cross bar and connected at their lower ends to the keepers, rollers jo-urnaled in the outer ends of the levers and adapted to engage the inner edge of the trip bar, and springs carried by the cross bar and having their free terminals positioned in rear and against said rollers for retaining said rollers in engagement with the inner edge of the trip bar.
