BUTT OF AN UMBRELLA AND PARASOL RIB AND STRETCHER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN Lorz, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Butt of an Umbrella and Parasol Rib and Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the class of rib and stretcher members of an umbrella or parasol having non-corrosive butts thereon and it consists of means applicable to such butts and members whereby the connection of said butts with said members is braced and vastly strengthened.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrmnentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.

Referring to the drawings :--1 designates a portion of an umbrella rib, and 9. designates a butt of non-corrosive metal, said rib being U-shaped in cross section, and said butt partly embracing the end portion of said rib and being partly folded into the channel of the rib and also extending beyond the extreme terminal of the rib and its folds flattened togetlier forming the neck 3,

the same being pierced or perforated forming the eye 4 of the butt which member is connectible with the notched collar of the umbrella.

with a butt constructed as above, the eye member thereof is connectible with the runner of the umbrella, these features, however, per so, being known in the art.

In order to strengthen the joint of the butt with the rib, either member being liable to bend laterally 011 the other due to the side strain to which it is subjected, when the umbrella is in use, I employ the brace and strengthening member 5 which consists of a piece of wire of strong and noncorrosive material, such as phosphor bronze. In assembling the parts, I lay a portion of said piece in the channel in the end portion of the rib so as to rest on the base thereof, and lay the other portion thereof on the base of the neck of the butt, so as to rest thereon, said base being solid or unbroken whereby said piece 5 will not drop through the same, see Fig. 6, the piece thus being bridged from the end portion of the umbrella member to the end portion of the butt, so as to occupy both of the same thus breakingthe joint of the butt and umbrella rib, the piece being furthermore out of the plane of the eye 4 so that the attaching device for the notched collar or the runner will pass freely through said eye without being obstructed by the piece and without the necessity of piercing the piece which otherwise would weaken the latter. Then the folds of said eye portions are brought together and flattened forming the neck as has been stated and tightly compressing the portion of the piece 5 within and between the latter and firmly retaining it in position, the portion of the piece in the channel at the end of the rib being also tightly clamped therein, it being seen that the piece 5 is held by the contiguous Walls of the butt and rib with a vise-like grip. This braces and strengthens the joint of the butt and rib and acts as a reinforce therefor, whereby side bending, torsion or twisting of the butt on the rib and vice versa are restrained and a strong connection of the butt and rib is provided.
