To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES T. BLOOMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Paper Vessel, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to paper vessels and particularly to means for closure thereof. I

The object of this invention is to provide means for effecting a simple and convenient means for closing and sealing vessels of this character which are provided with suitable cover flaps to retain the contents therein.

With the above and other objects in view this invention is embodied in the novel arrangetnent and construction hereinafter described and ai s-illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, and in which, 7

Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 indicates the vessel of usual construction, being folded from a suitable paper blank and having the folded sides-6 and 6 overlapping eachother at the upper edge of the vessel, the inner cover flaps 13, and the outer cover flaps 12 and 14, the latter flap 14 being at the side on which the folded

A metallic tongue 7 projects upward from behind the folded sides 6 and 6' being set slightly to one side of the center of the vessel and a tab 9 extends from the outer edge of the flap 12 and has an aperture 10 therein, the outer edge 10 of which is adapted to coincide with the upper edges of the folded

6 and 6 when the .flap 12 is folded down in position as shown in Fig. 1, the tongue 7 passing through the aperture 10 and when folded back over the outer faces of the

6 and 6 with the tab 9 thereinunder seals the flap 12 in position. The outer edge of the tab 9 is cut diagonally as indicated at 9 to fit along the diagonal edge of the side 6 and the-inner edge 9" is arranged at the center of the vessel in the path of the bail 11 which is secured to the folded sides 6 and 6' in the usual manner (not shown).

In closing the vessel, the flaps 13 are first folded inward over the top-thereof and the flap 14 is then folded downwardly thereover and finally the flap 12 is folded down over the flap 14, the tongue 7 passing conveniently through the aperture 10. Then by bending the tongue '7 downward the flap 12 is conveniently sealed in its position. The edge 10 of the aperture 10' coinciding with the upper edges of the folded sides 6' and 6 provides for a secure connection between the tongue 7 and the tab 9. The tab 9 is readily released from the tongue 7 by pressing the corresponding side of the res sel slightly inward which permits the fingers to engage the tab and then by bending the same upward the tab is permitted to slide oil of the tongue to allow the flaps to open.

The chief feature of this invention in connection with the general type of vessel as described, is the provision of the apertured tab 9 projecting from the free edge of the cover flap 12 and in thesame plane with the said flap and the metallic tongue 7 upstanding from behind the folded sides and perpendicular to the cover plane of the vessel, whereby upon the cover flaps being folded over the vessel the said tongue passes readily through the apertured tab to be bent over the respective side of the vessel to clamp the tab against the said side of the vessel. The tongue 7 in being secured between the said folded side and the correspondin side of the vessel prevents the tongue rom being loosened in the act of bending the tongue and otherwise prevents the tongue from becoming loosened. The tab 9 in being folded over the side of the vessel eliminates the greater part of the strain from the tongue 7 thus reducing the tendency of the tab from tearing loose. It will also be noted that the sides of the vessel in becoming bulged when the vessel is filled, and upon the cover flaps being folded over the vessel, the tongue 7 may be readily bent to pass through the aperture 10 in the tab 9, and then by drawing the free end of the tongue away from the corresponding side of the vessel the cover flap 12 is drawn taut over the vessel, the said tongue and tab then being bent over the corresponding side of this vessel to clamp the tab against the said sue.

What is claimed as new is 1. 'A vessel of the character described, provided with a cover flap on one side rovided with an apertured'tab projecting rom the'free edge thereof and in the same plane with the said flap, and a metallic tongueupstanding from the opposite side perpendicular to the cover plane and adapted to pass through the apertured tab upon the cover fiap being folded over the vessel and to be bent over the respective side of the vessel to clamp the tab against the said side of the vessel.

2. A receptacle folded from a blank and having a bottom, sides, ends, corner folds overlapping the sides and also overlapping each other, a bail connected with said overlapping corner folds, at the middle of the sides, inner flaps hinge-connected with the ends, and inner and outer cover flaps hingeconnected with the sides, theouter cover flap having, offset from the middle thereof, a tab formed with an opening, a bendable fastening member extending upward from the side with which the inner cover flap is hingeconnected and being adapted to extend through the opening in said tab and to be folded. with said tab downward on the outside of said corner folds.

A receptacle folded from a blank, and having a bottom, sides, ends, corner folds overlapping the sides and also overlapping each other, a bail connected with said overlapping corner folds at the center of the sides, inner flaps hinge-connected with the ends, and inner and outer cover flaps hingeconnected with the sides, the outer cover flap having, offset from the middle thereof,

an integral tab formed with an opening, one

fastening strip being offset toone side of said bail and being adapted to extend through the opening in said tab and to be folded with said tab downward on the outside of said corner folds, so that the-diagonally cut edge of said tab will lie parallel with the adjacent diagonally extending edge of the outer corner fold.
