To all whom t may concern:
Be it known ythat We, CLARENCE 'On and Hemos L. DoUoLAs, eitisens of me United States, residing at iandoipn and Craftshury7 respeotiveiya in the Counties of Orangeand ileans, respectiveiy, and State of Vermont, have invented Acertain nenY and useful improvements in Rntchetiifienehes? of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the scconipenjying drawings.
This-inventioi1-relates to ratchet Wrencin a' device of this character of simple, duiehie and` inexpensive construction and which is of great convenience in piaeticei use.
Another and more specific object oi? the invention -resides in the provision of body bei', n hnndie loosely mounted upon bei', :ind rstchets longitudinally adjustable upon the baron opposite of the hondle, sind handle vcsiying; pawis to cosct with said ratchets, wheieby the body om may he fotsted in opposite directions.
A' 4further object of the invention is to provide .a ratchet Wtenoh having e 'pair of Spring 4pressed ptt-wis mounted in its body, and means for retaining seid pewis in their inoperative position.,
Withthe shove and other objects in view as will 'become sppaentas thefdesciijotion proceeds,4 invention consists in certain constellations, eoinoinations and artsentementsl of parts that We shaii heieinai-ei' uiiy describe end claim.
For 'e fuii /undestandlng of the inv-en- `tion refeience is to be had to the follow ing description and accompanying drawings 1n .Winch- Figure l 1s n .side elevation of e i'atchet wrench embodying the 'presentinvention;
Fig. 2 is section teken on the Eine 2 2 oi' F 1g. l; Fig. 3 is s section taken on tne line 3 3 of Fig., l; Fig. i 1s av deteli pei- .spectiye View of one of the pawis.

osed on osite to the riooves 19. The awis and are adapted to be received in the grooves x-d n the Wrench is provided- CII of the groove enabies the pin 21 to be readily engaged by the fingers to move the pin out of said groove. :ind dispose the same for movement. in. the slot. 18. The end portion QQ of the pin bearing against. the wall ot the groove .20 against which it. is foi-eed by the spring 13 etfeetually revents accidental or unintentional outward3 movement of the pin 2l from the body ot the wrench. Tn this manner the pon'l is securely held in its inoperative position.
ln the une ot our improved wreneh, the .ratehets ond the body of the wrench are adjusted upon the ber 5 to the proper posi- 'tion wliireby the operator is enabled to munipulate the wreneh handle. This longitudinal adjustment is partieularly desirable iu the use ot the deviee t'or removing or tightening bolts` or nut,l of automobiles or similar vehieles. fitter the parts have been properly adjusted, the operator moves ,one of the ratehet'v engaging paivls and Secures the same in its inoperative position in the manner above deseribed. rlhe other pawl engaging the teeth ot' one ot' the ratchets looks the wrench upon the body bar when the wreurh handle is moved in one direetion, whereby the bor rotated. In order to reverse the rotation of the bnr ity is of course iniderstood that the other of the pawls is disposed in engagement. with the other ratehet while the first. pnwi is secured in its inoperative position in the body ot the wreneh.
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have produeed a double acting ratchety wreneh which is of con'lparatively simple. construction, strong and durable in practieal use and may be produced at comparatively small oost.
le will be obvious that the various ports mny be readily assembled in position and ensity and quiekly adjusted in the manner sety '.t'orth,
yThe deviee is also susceptible of a gre-nt muny minor modilientions in the form, pro portions and arrnngement of the elements employed without departing from the essential features or soeritieing any of the advantages tl i ereot".
lleving thus` deseribod the invention, what Claimed is:
L The combination with o body har, of a wrench having` un extension loosely mounted upon said bar, ratchets lmnged upon the bar u on opposite sides ofuid extension, said iiar having a. longitudinll series of threaded openings, screws to be threaded in said openin to adjustably seeure the ratehets upon t e bar, and spring pressed pnwls mounted in the wrench t0 eoart with said ratchets whereby the body bar may be rotated in either direction.
Q. The combination with a body bar, 0f a wrench having a loectan lar body portion provided with a re uced extension loosely mounted upon said bar, spaced ratehets fixed upon the body bar on opposite sidesof said extension, said wrench body having longitudinal sockets, plwll mounted iu said sockets to engage rotehets, sn'ings arranged in the sockets and normally netin to orce the wls into' engagement with tie rntchets, sind wrench body having longitudinal slots communieating;r with said sockets, ins fixed to the pawls and movable in sai slotsz said body. bar havingr grooves in its op oslte facu toreceive said pins whereby t e pawls are held in their inoperative position.
P. The rombinntion with u..body bar, 'of l i wr-rnt-h loosely mounted upon 'sald bar `and having a rectangular body iortion, Spiced ratehets fixed upon the bar, t e body 0 slid wrench having:y longitudinal sockets, plwll arranged in' seid sockets, springs englging the pawls and normally forcing the Slm into eneagement with the ratchets, said wreneh bod y having longitudinal slots communieuting with said sockets and provided in its opposite faces at the inner ends of said slots with laterally extending ves,
the other taees of the wrench body a so hnvure' grooves therein communicating with the first named grooves, und pins fixed to slid 0I pawls to move the pawls inwardly in tho sot-trete to au inoperative position, said being adopted to be received .in said nomed grooves and having angularly bent ends to engage in the latter grooves.
ln testimony whereof we hereunto Bmx our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
