LAMP-BURNER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1913.
Application mea March 27, '1912. serial No. 686,703.
To all w/tom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK PUJoL, a citizen of the United States, residing in St.l Charles county, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Lamp- Burner, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to lamp burners and more particularly to that class of burners used in connection with block or switchsignals which are intended to burn as long as possible without trimming.
In the burners of the class above referred to, it is necessary to use a round wick in order to obtain the feature of long burning without trimming. It is, however, desirable to have the Haine of such lamps lat such as is produced by a flat wick.
The main obj ect of my present invention is to procure a flat flame and at the same time retain the use of the round wick.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form of burner made in accordance with my invention, lFigure 1 is aV side elevation, the chimney being shown inb section, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the auxiliary wick tube and the parts attached thereto.
Like marks of reference refer to similar parts in the several views of the drawings.
5 represents the body of the burner which is provided with the usual threaded nipple 6 for engagement with the lamp font; extending upwardly from the body 5 is a main wick tube 7 through which passes thek usual round wick 8 controlled by the usual shaft 9; surrounding the main wick tube 7 is an auxiliary tube 10 which projects some distance above the main wick tube 7. As the tube 10 surrounds the tube 7, it is evident that the upper part of the wick will have an air space between it and the tube 10 equal to the thickness of the wall of the tube 7. In order to provide for the passage of air to this air space and at the same time to increase elasticity of the tube 10, I provide in the lower end of said tube slots 11 which extend above the end of the main wick tube 7. The upper end of the wick tube 10 is slotted and slightly flared as shown at 12. The auxiliary wick tube is substantially the same as shown in my prior granted to me Sepabove the end of the auxiliary tube 10 are flame spreading wings 13 which are preferably substantially diamond shaped, as shown in F ig. 2. The object of these wings is to spread the flame and thus make it approach the form produced by a flat wick'. Rigidly carried by the tube 10 is a gallery 14. This gallery 14 is provided with up'- wardly extending spring fingers l5 which may be made integral with the gallery 14, as shown in Jghe drawing, or formed in any other usual manner. These fingers 15 retain the lamp chimney 16 inthe usual manner.
Extending downwardly from the gallery 14 are draft shields 17, each of which covers substantially one fourth of the circumference of the burner. Between these shields 17 the gallery 14 is cut away, as best shown at 18, Fig. 2, so as to leave the draft passages in the gallery at right angles to the wings 13. The drafts will thus be directed insuch a manner as t0 flatten the flame of the burner and assist the wings 13 in the spreading of the same. As the lingers 16 and the draft shields 17 are both carried by the auxiliary tube 10, it will be evident that the flat side of the flame can be directed in any suitable direction by turning the auxiliary wick1 tube without disturbing the body 5 of the burner.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a lamp burner, the combination with aA wick tube slotted at its upper end, of a pair of flame spreading wings extending laterally at a point above the upper end of said tube.
2. In a lamp burner, the combination with a wick tube, of a pair of substantially diamond shaped flame spreading wings extending laterally at a point above the upper end of said tube.
3. In a lamp burner, the combination with a wick tube, of a pair of flame spreading wings extending laterally from said tube, a gallery surrounding said tube, spring arms extending u wardly from said gallery, and draft shiel s extending downwardly from said gallery.
4. In a lamp burner, the combination with a wick tube vof a pair of flame s reading wings extending laterally from sai tube, a
gallery surrounding said tube, said gallery being provided with draft passages substantially at right angles to said wings, spring arms extending upwardly from said gallery, and draft shields extending downwardly from said gallery.
5. In a lamp burner, the combination with a main wick tube, of a removable auxiliary wick tube surrounding said main wick tube, a gallery secured to said auxiliary tube, spring arms extending upwardly from said gallery, and draft shields extending downwardly from said gallery.
6. In a lamp burner, the combination with a main wick tube, of a removable auxiliary wick tube surrounding said main tube, flame spreading wings extending laterally from said auxiliary wick tube at a point above its upper end, a gallery secured to said auxiliary tube, spring arms extending upwardly substantially at right angles to said wings, 30
and draft shields extending downwardly from said gallery.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and atiixed my seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
