JOSEPH IB. KNAPP, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
CREOSOTE-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4,1913.
Application filed September 30, 1912. Serial No. 723,225.
(DEDICATED TO THE PUBLIC.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH B. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, and an employee of the Department of Agriculture of the said United States, residing in the city of Portland, State of Oregon, (whose post-- oflice address is 4:19 Beck Building,) have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in CreosoteI-Ieaters.
This application is made under the act of March 8, 1883, chapter 1&3 (22 Stat, 625) and the invention herein described and claimed may be used by the Government of the United States or any of its officers or employees in the prosecution of work for the United States or by any person in the United States without the payment of any royalty thereon.
My invention relates to creosote heaters.
The object of my invention is to provide a compact, portable heater, suitable for heating creosote employed in the brush treatment of wood to prevent decay. My apparatus is simple and cheap in construction, can be easily handled, operated with safety, and conveniently carried from place to place. It is intended part-iclarly for use in forest work where apparatus adapted for heating creosote can not be readily conveyed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my heater, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the collar forming the heating compartment.
The heater herein described consists of triple detachable parts, namely: a base, a bucket, and a plumbers blow torch.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the base which structurally is in the form of a frustum of a cone, surmounted by a cylindrical collar, B, made preferably of galvanized iron. The frustum surface of the base, A, is inclosed with a fine wire mesh, C, and is stiffened by iron standards, D, which are secured at the bottom to a perforated circular sheet iron plate, E, and at the top to an iron ring, F. A galvanized iron door, G, having a plurality of perforations, H, is arranged in the side of the base, A, for admitting the blow torch, 1, into the heating compartment.
mounting the frustum portion of the base,
A, is provided with a flat iron ring, J, on which the bucket container, K, rests. This bucket is an ordinary cylindrical galvanized iron pail, having suitable handle and cover. Attached to the bucket, K, are lugs, L, and on the periphery of the ring, J, are a series of slots, M, for the reception of said lugs when the bucket holding the preservatives is adjusted for heating. This arrangement of the lugs and slots enables the operator to rapidly detach the bucket at any time by slightly turning it.
The collar, B, forms a heating chamber or compartment with the bucket, K, arranged above, and an asbestos plate, 0, arranged below, which said plate, 0, is reinforced underneath by a galvanized iron plate, P. An opening or perforation, Q, is cut in the center of each of said plates, 0 and P, to permit the passage of the flame and nozzle of the blow torch, I.
In operating my invention an ordinary blow torch, modified so as to direct the flame vertically, may be employed as a heating medium. The flame of such torch can be easily regulatedor controlled so-as to insure a uniform temperature to the preservative or other material in the bucket requiring treatment. The blow pot I," is protected from explosion or other injury due to in tense heat, by the asbestos plate, 0, and the galvanized iron plate P, of the collar, B, through which the flame is directed against the bottom of the bucket, K, and by the circulation of air around the blow torch compartment within the lower chamber.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a heater, comprising a base surmounted by a cylindrical collar having a ring at its top for the reception of a bucket, a perforated asbestos plate reinforced with a perforated iron plate disposed at the base of said collar, and a blow torch for entering said perforated plates, substantially as specified.
2. In a heater, comprising a base in the form of a frustum of a cone having a perforated plate at its bottom and its surface inclosed with fine wire mesh, iron standards secured to said base for stiffening said mesh, a perforated door for affording entrance to said base a collar surmounting said base ing heat to said compartment, substantially 10 having a slotted ring at its top and perfoas specified.
