To all whom 2'25 may concern:

Be it known that I, ARNOLD BINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable LetteringBlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to lettering blocks and more particularly to the type used by sign painters and the like in laying out or blocking in the letters of a sign and has for an object to provide a form having the proportions and dimensions thereon accurate for particular styles of letters so that an inexperienced person may design lettering having the dimensions and proportions accurate.

An object of this invention is to provlde a simple device to establish the several dimensions of a set of letters so that an inexperienced personlnay do rapid and accurate work by the aid thereof.

A further object of this invention is to provide a. device which is adjustable longitudinally and laterally so as to permit the form to assist in forming letters which havev to be applied within a given space.

A further object of this invention is to provide a form in which the height and width of a letter may be varied and one in which the thickness of the horizontal and vertical lines of a letter may be varied.

Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the parts in position to produce the smallest letter for a given form, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of Fig. 1 having the width and length elongated and the thickness of the vertical and horizontal guides extended so as to increase the several proportions uniformly, Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 1 in extended position, Fig. 5 is a sectional View as on the line 55 of Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form, Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the members 14 removed, and, Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the members 13 removed.

WVhen it is desired 'to outline a, number of letters or figures in a given space as to produce a sign, it is diflicult to proportion the letters or figures accurately by sketching the same or considerable time is lost in measuring each dimension. By the aid of the block shown in the drawings of this application it is easy to outline the letters desired to place in a given area and in the event of a greater or less number of letters to be placed in a given area, the block may be adjusted so that the height or width of the complete letters is altered to suit the requirements and to avoid the necessity of having numerous forms or blocks, I intend to provide one which is adjustable to all dimensions within a reasonable range so that the same elements may be used to produce different size letters. I

Referring more specifically to the drawings, there is shown a rectangular block A' having the central portion thereof removed as at B. The block comprises the corner members 10, side bars 11 and end bars 12. together with the laterally movable members 13 and 14, the members 13 moving under the members 11 and the members 14 moving under the members 12. Each of the corners 10 is provided with the slots 15 and 16 which receive the bolts 17 which bolts pass through the several members as shown, the members 11 are provided with the raised portion 18 which is intended to limit the inward movement of the ends and the members 11 also are drilled to receive the bolts 17. The members 11 are notched as at 19 to permit the ends 12 folding in compact form and also allow a continuous edge to the meeting corners of the members Hand 12. The members 13 and 14 are provided with the transverse slots 20 which receive the heads of the bolts 17 and by which the members 13 and 14 are guided in their lateral movement, the corners 10, side and end pieces 11 and 12 and the laterally slidable members 13 and 14 may be provided with graduations 21 to indicate the proper adjustment of the several parts with respect to one another so that the proportion may be uniformly maintained and the adjustment is possible by releasing the nuts 22 on the several bolts 17 which permit freedom of movement of the several parts with respect to one another whereupon the corners 10 may he slid longitudinally with respect to the members 11 and 12 to the desired degree and the laterally movable pieces 13 and 14 may be moved the desired distance after which rotation of the nuts 22 in the proper direction firmly binds the several parts in fixed relation.

I have shown the ends of the members 11, 12, 13 and 14 recessed and beveled so as to permit the same to assume a snug fit when in closed position but the ends of these members may be reduced to half thickness so that the adjacent member overlaps or underlies the ends of these members and as all four sides of the block are substantially the same a description of the modified form shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings may be readily understood as applied to each of the four sides. As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings there would be an interval of space between the ends of the lines drawn along the sides and ends of the form which in most cases is desired as points for the diagonal lines are established thereby but when it is desired to make the monster letters having the extensions beyond the uprights of the letters slidable members 23 2 which are carried by the laterally slidable members 13 and 14 and have the pins 24 passing through the longitudinal slots 25 in the members 13 and 14 to permit the desired movement, may he slid to permit their ends to extend beyond the edge of the perpendicular side of the form.

Numerous modifications may be made within the scope of my invention so I do not restrict myself to the identical form shown but have submitted the same for illustrative purposes only and Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. In a lettering block, a rectangular form, to outline letters said form comprising side and end bars, said side and end bars being capable of being increased in width and means to hold the several parts rigid with respect to one another.

2. In "a lettering block, a rectangular form to outline letters or the like, said form comprising side and end bars, said side and end bars being capable of being increased in length and Width, means to bind the several. parts together and graduations on said side and end bars to gage the adjustments.

3. In a lettering block, a rectangular form to outline letters or the like, said form comprising side and end bars, said side and end bars being capable of being increased in length and width, graduations on'said side and end barsto gage the adjustments thereof, and longitudinally slidable members carried by said ends and sides to extend beyond the outline of the form when desired.

4. In a lettering block, a rectangular form comprising corner members, side and end bars slidably secured thereto, laterally slidable members slidably secured to said side and end bars, means to secure the several members rigidly to one another when so desired and said laterally slidable side and end bars being fitted to one another to have the ends of the edges thereof terminate at the corners of the form.

5. In a lettering block, a rectangular form comprising corner members, side and end bars slidably secured thereto, laterally slidable members slidably secured to said side and end bars, means for rigidly securing the several parts together when so desired, longitudinally slidable members carried by said laterally slidable members adapted to be extended beyond the outline of the form when desired and graduations on the several movable parts to gage the adj ustments thereof.
