Description

@sind tant sind editrice,
Letters Patent No. 105,239, dated J'ny 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N FARM-FENCE. I
The Schedule referred to in thesemetters Patent and making pmt of the SamevTo all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. Owens, of Granville, in the county of Licking and State ot' Ohio, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing a Fence for Farms and other purposes and do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon. v
The nature of' my invention consists in constructing sectional posts, made of suitable material, forming on their sides slots or openings, two sides ot' which are for the reception of rails or boards for its panels; thc
lothers are used for bracing sideways, keying thc pannels together, the forming of corners, and the reception of partitions, or division-fences, having also a base-board inserted in its bottom transversely, to serve as feet on which it rests or stands when set up. To enable others skilled in mechanical arts to make and use my invention, l will proceed to describe its construction andsetting np.
Take lumber oi' any kind, one inch thick, four inches wide, and ent into lengths ot' desired height, say four feet eight inches, four for cach post, A A A A, Figure l.
0f the same material cut'five long, B B B B B, Figure 2.
Then take a board one inch thick, six inches \vide,and out pieces four feet long, one for each post, shown at O, iig. 2.
Then (having the thickness of the panel-boards or Vrails D, Figure 3,) take two ofthe upright sections A and lay them down on a smooth place, apart ]'nst the thickness of the two panel-boards D, say two inches.
This will be the width of the slots E, fig. 2, which are made to receive the ends of the boards, and the cxtreme ofthe nprights will be just the length ofthe cross-sections B, fig. 2, which should bc placed as follows:
Commence at the bottom. Place a cross-section on them at right angles with its lower edge, twelve inches from the ends, and secure it there with nails. Place the next six inches from the one, and so on, till all are secured to their proper places.
Then take-the transverse board C, iig. 2, lay it on the bottom ends of the upright sections A A, already secured, and midway of itself, and secure it also by nails.
Then clip od', with saw, the top corners of' the third pieces ten inches cross-section B, as shown at L', tig. 2, to rcccive the ends of the braces F F, g. 2.
Cut thc braces oii the same material as the uprightv sections A A, with the upper ends out diagonal or beveled to fit close against; cross-section B, as shown at e e, lig. 2, and secure them there to the uprights, and at thc lower cud to the transverse board oi' foot below, as shown at j, fig. 2.
Non', take the remaining two upright sections, place them on eitherl ends of your cross-sections and footboard, and neatly over their fellows, and nail them there.
To the top of this post secure a cap, yG, fig. 1, cxtendiug over all around, about one inelnto'shed the weather.
For panels, take tive oi' more boards, (if` for boardfencc,) one inch thick, six inches wide, and length. as desired. Square the ends.
Then in the top and bottom boards out ont a gain one and one-fourth inch from the ends, one incli wide and one inch deep, Iig. 3. Then place them all the proper distance apart, to fit the openings oi' theparts and nail across them midway a bottom, I, iig. 3, to support them and prevent them from springing singly; or, if more convenient, prepare thc bottom` and pnt it on after insertingr the panel-boards into their places as you set np the fence.
To connect the panels, make keys J, Figure 4. Set up the posts, and insert the ends ofthe panels, taking care to have them with gains placed at thc top and bottom, with gains up.
Then, through the top and bottom transverse openings, insert the keys J through the gains g, tig. 3, ot' the panels, as shown at 71, lig. 1, and there is a goed portable felice.
lhlorconnccting partition fences and turning corners, use the post without braces, or one only, as required, and insert the panels in the transverse slots or openings. What I claim as m`y invention, and desire Letters Patent therefor, is-
The combinations ot the posts A, with or without the caps G, connected together by the pieces B, transverse slots E, bottom-board C, and braces F, panels or boards D, inserted in thc slots l'l from opposite sides of the posts A, and firmly secured thereto by means of thc slots g and keys J, all constructed as as herein described, for thc purpose set forth.
