In order to vary the effect the upper parts of the crown could be trimmed in one color and the lower part in another without disclosing the usual more or less rough edge at the lineof stitching.

In trimming a hat formed with the flexible strip 5, the same is placed in position while the hat is in an expanded condition as shown in Fig. 2, and after all the trimming or covering has been added, the top 4 is pushed down or collapsed to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

In forming the brim the same may embody the same principle as disclosed in respect to the crown or bod by dividing the brim 1 into parts 13 an 14, the part 14 being preferably bent at 15 for forming a turned up portion- 16 over which the body portion of the crown is fitted, as clearly shown in Fig. '5. The portions 13 and 14 are connected by a flexible member 17 held in place preferably by lines of stitching 18 and 19.' If desired stiffenin "wires may be provided onv each edge 0 the flexible member 17 without departing from the spirit of the invention. In order to properly hold the brim in shape, stifl'ening wires 20 and 21 are usually provided, which of course are covered'by the trimming and will not therefore be visible. In forming the body in accordance with this invention the same may be trimmed-in two difierent parts, namely the crown or body portion may be trimmed and the brim may be trimmed separately, after which the crown or body is connected with the brim or'jthe crown and brim may be all trimmed at the same time; The flexible members arranged in the brim and the crown are designed to permit the proper movement ofthe sections of the crown and brim for allowing the brim to be properly laid and stitched in place.

Having thus described my "invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-

1. In-a hat of the class described, a crown formed in two parts of stiff material defining a side member and a top, and a flexible connecting band or strip connecting said side and top.

2. In a hat of the class described, a crown of comparatively stifl' material formed with an upstanding side member, a top, and a foldable connecting member of flexible material connecting the upper edge of said side member and the lower edge of said top together.

3. In a frame for a hat, a crownformed with an upstanding side member of comparatively stiff material, a flexible member connected to the exterior of the upper edge thereof and projecting therefrom, and a top of comparatively stiff material overlapping the upper edge of said flexible member, whereby when said top is forced downward a short distance said flexible member will be folded over the upper edge of said upstanding side member and under the lower edge of said top.

4. In a hat frame of the class described, a crown formed with a stiff upstanding side portion, a stiff top member, and aflexible connecting member,-said flexible connecting member being connected to the exterior of the upper edge of said side member and-to the interior of the lower edge of the top member whereby the same may be folded I over the upper edge of said side member and under the lower edge of said top whereby a finished crease or bend is provided intermediate the upper and lower edges of said crown.

5. In a hat frame of the class described, a crown formed" with an upstanding stiff side member, a stiif top, a flexible strip connected atthe opposite edges of the up er edge of said side member and the lower e ge of said top, and a bindingand stiffening member extending around said crown near the edges-of said flexible member.

6. In a hat of the class described, a crown formed in two parts, a flexible member con- .necting said parts, a brim of stiff material formed into a piurality of concentrically arranged parts, and a flexible member connecting said parts. 1'

7. In a hat of the class described, a crown, a brim formed into a plurality of concentrically arranged parts, and an annular flexible member connecting said parts.

8. In a hat of the class described, a crown of comparatively stifi material formedinto two parts, each of said parts having c1rcu-' lar edges, :1 flexible connecting strip r connecting said edges together, a brim connected with said crown, said brim being formed of a air of rings of stiff material set at an ang e to each other, and a flexible member connected to the adjacent edges of said rings. 7

9. In a hat of the class described, a crown, a brim of stiff material formed in two parts arranged at an angle to each other, and a foldable flexible member connecting said parts and normally spacing said parts.
