Description

G. HELPS.
INCANDBSCENT GAS LAMP.
APPLICATION FILED Nov.15, 1912.

GEORGE HELPS, OF ATHERSTONE, ENGLAND.
INGANDESCENT GAS-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4,1913.
Application filed November 15, 1912. Serial No. 731,587.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE HELPS, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Izons Croft, Ansley, Atherstone, England, have invented a new and useful Incandescent- Gas-Lamp, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in incandescent gas lamps.
According to this invention the nipple tube is detachably connected to the supply pipe so that it can be easily and quickly withdrawn from the lamp without' taking the lamp to pieces. In carrying out the invention the burner tube and lamp to which it is attached are provided with flanges which are connected together by hangers; these hangers serving the double purpose of making a gas tight joint between the nipple tube and the supply pipe, preferably by clamping the nipple tube or a block upon it to the supply pipe, and also of enabling the lamp and burner to be swung to one side so that the nipple tube can be withdrawn.
In the drawings illustrating the invention Figure 1 is a front elevation and Fig. 2 a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a modification.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the supply pipe 1 is provided with a flange 2 and the burner tube 3 is provided with a flange 4. The nipple tube 5 is screw threaded to receive the coned block 6, the upper end of the nipple tube 5 being screw threaded to receive the union 7 which screws onto the tap 1a on the end of the supply pipe 1. The block 6 and union 7 of the nipple tube 5 are clamped between the flanges 2 and 4 of the supply pipe 1 and burner tube 3 respectively by means of the hangers 8 and wing nuts 9. The nipple tube 5 passes through a hole or stufng box in the flange 4. The flange 4 is provided with trunnions 10 to receive the ends of the hangers 8. When it is desired to remove the nipple tube 5 the wing nuts 9 are slackened, the union 7 is unscrewed from the burner tube 3 and it can then be tilted and the nipple tube withdrawn. The height of the nipple tube 5 can be adjusted by screwing the block 6 up or down it.
In Fig. 3 the nipple tube 5 is provided with a block 6 which is clamped between the flanges 2 and 4 of the supply pipe 1 and burner tube 3 respectively by means of the hangers 8 and wing nuts 9 thus making a gas tight joint with the supply pipe 1 One of the hangers passes through a hole 20 in the liange 2 while the other hanger passes through the slot 11 in the flange 2 so that on slackening the wing nuts 9 the hanger can be swung clear of' the slot 11, the burner tube 3 can then be turned around and the nipple tube 5 withdrawn. In this case the height of the nipple tube 5 cannot be adjusted.
What I claim is j 1. In an incandescent gas lamp, a supply pipe, a burner tube movable out of alinement with the supply pipe, hangers connecting the supply pipe to the burner tube, a nipple tube movable laterally away from the supply tube while supported by the burner tube, removable endwise from the burner tube when thus moved away, and nia-king a gas-tight joint with the supply pipe.
2. In an incandescent gas lamp, a supply pipe, a burner tube movable out of alinement with the supply pipe, hangers connecting the supply pipe to the burner tube, a nipple tube movable laterally away from the supply pipe while supported by the burner tube, and removable endwise from the burner tube when thus moved away and a block on the nipple tube making a gas-tight joint with the supply pipe.
3. In an incandescent gas lamp, a supply pipe, a burner tube, hangers connecting the supply pipe to'the burner tube, a nipple tube movable laterally away from the supply pipe while supported by the burner tube and removable endwise from the burner tube when thus moved away, and means carried by the hangers for holding the nipple tube in gas-tight connection with the supply pipe.
4. In an incandescent gas lamp, a supply pipe, a burner tube, hangers connected with the supply pipe and having a pivotal connection with the burner tube for enabling the burner tube to be swung relatively to the supply pipe, and a nipple tube movable laterally away from the supply pipe when the burner tube is swung on its hangers and which is removable endwise from the burner tube when thus swung away from the sup- Ply rlp@ 5. In an incandescent gas lamp, a supply pipe, a burner tube, hangers connecting the supply pipe to the burner tube, a nipple tube movable laterally away from the supply pipe, removable endwise from the burner tube and making a gas tight joint with the supply pipe at Varying heights of the nptube, a removable nipple tube, anda block ple tube, and an adjustable block upon the upon it pressed against the supply pipe by nipple tube to adjust the height of the nipthe hangers.
