UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE.
OSCAR RIES, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
SAW-QILER.
Application filed October 26, 1911, Serial No. 656,890. Renewed November 23, 1912.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR M. Bins, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Oilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in oilers for hand saws.
One object of the invention is to provide a saw oiler having a reservoir forming part of the handle of the saw and which is provided with an improved construction and arrangement of feed valve whereby the oil may be supplied to the saw as needed or when desired.
lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a saw and handle showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing 1 denotes the handle of my improved saw comprising an inner hollow member 2 formed of suitable metal, preferably aluminum, and an outer member 3 of wood or other suitable material which forms the grip and which is of the usual shape. The outer member 3 is secured to the hollow metal member by screws 4 or other suitable fastening devices as shown.
In the inner or forward edge of the hollow member of the handle is formed a recess which is adapted to receive the end of the saw blade 5, said end of the saw being secured to the handle by screws 6 as shown. In the inner or forward edge of the handle, about in line with the center of the blade and opening on opposite sides of the same, is an oil discharge port 7 adapted to be Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4,1913.
Serial No. 733,179.
opened and closed by a needle valve 8, the outer end of which is threaded and works through a threaded passage in the outer or rear edge of the hollow member of the handle. The inner end of the valve is of conical shape and is adapted to engage a seat 8 formed around the port 7 whereby the latter is opened or closed.
On the outer end of the valve is a milled head which, when the valve is screwed up to a closed position, is adapted to fit in a recess 9 formed in the outer edge of the hollow member 2. A washer 9 is arranged on the valve under the head and forms a fluid tight closure for the threaded opening in the hollow member of the handle. In the threaded port-ion of the valve is formed a longitudinal groove 10 which forms an air passage or vent whereby the oil may flow freely from the discharge port when the valve is opened. In the upper edge of the hollow handle member 2 is formed a filling opening which is normally closed by a screw plug 12.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a saw oiler, an oil reservoir in the handle provided with a discharge port opening on the edge of the saw and formed at its inner end into a valve seat, a threaded opening in the Wall of the reservoir opposite to and in alinement with the discharge port and partially threaded, a needle valve threaded into the last named opening having a head, a washer under the head, a groove in its side extending longitudinally from the head, and a forward end shaped to fit the valve seat, the length of the valve from DOiIlt to head bein such as to comn1 hand in resence of two subscribim a: 2: press the Washer and close the head end of witnesses.
the groove when the discharge port is closed OSCAR M. RIES. by the valve, and to open the groove When WVitnesses: 5 the valve is opened. B. L. BOYER,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set LENNARD M. \VERDELMAN.
