SCREW-CUTTING DIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1913.
Application filed May 8, 1912. Serial No. 695,971.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alva, in the county of Lee, State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Cutting Dies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to screw cutting dies and has for an object to provide a device that may be adjusted to cut threads on various sizes of screws, novel means being employed for lockingly holding the dies in any adjusted position.
The invention resides generally in the novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and specifically resides in the novel form of spring controlled locking pin for holding the dies in adjusted position.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2-2 Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, designates a housing or frame which may be formed of any desired material and is substantially in the shape of a plate having circular ends and having a flange rising from the edges. Handle sockets 11 are secured to the flange in alinement with the long diameter thereof and receive handles 12.
The cutting dies consist of steel disks 13 having arcuate notches 1 1 in their peripheries, said notches being graduated in size, and being provided with screw cutting threads 15 so as to present two cutting edges in the confronting peripheries of the disks, to the blank screw. The disks each have a central opening through which and the plate a pin 16 is passed, the latter being equipped with a head 17 by means of which the corresponding disk may be rotated. The disks are readily adjusted to position by simply turning their respective pins, and for locking the disks in any adjusted position spring controlled pins are employed which will no be described.
Between each two adjacent notches in each disk is formed an opening 18 adapted to receive the tip of a spring pressed pin 19. The pin is formed with a head 20 exterior of the frame by means of which the pin may be withdrawn to permit of rotation of the disk, and the pin is furthermore equipped with a spring 21 which is attached at one end to the pin adjacent to the disk, and bears at the other end against the plate of the frame, the spring storing up energy as the pin is withdrawn from one orifice in the disk to urge the pin into the next succeeding orifice which comes into registration with the pin during rotation of the disk.
The pin may thus be manipulated to lock the disk in any desired position. As a further means for holding the disks stationary, each disk is provided peripherally with a'series of notches 22, and formed in the frame in alinement with each handle socket is an opening 23 which is interiorly threaded and receives a threaded pin 24:, the latter being provided with a wrench head 25 to which a spanner wrench or similar tool may be applied or to which the fingers may be applied in advancing the tip of the pin into any desired notch in the disk.
By virtue of the screw pins and spring pressed pins, both disks are positively held stationary so that danger of the disks slipping during the operation of cutting threads on the larger blank bolts is positively pre- Vented.
WVhat is claimed is A cutting tool including an annular frame, a die plate revolubly mounted within said frame and having a notch in the edge confronting the inner face of said frame, a locking pin threaded into said inner face and adapted to enter said notch, and an integral nut on said pin to facilitate application and removal of said pin from said die, said pin being adapted to be advanced with said nut engaging said die to hold said pin in operative position, said nut lying entirely within said frame whereby accidental dislodgment of said pin is prevented.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. LEWIS.
