Letters Patent No. 105,205, (lated July 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT ING-U'AIRD FOR AX-HANDLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same with such parts asI claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to that class of appliances` which is used for protecting and strengthening the handles of axes, and
The nature thereof consists in certain modifications in the details and improvements in the construction of the same hereinafter described and shown.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my irtlvention and forms a part of the specification there- 0 Figure 1 is a view, in perspective, of an ax of the usual form, with my invention applied thereto; and
Figure 2 illustrates the shield.
The construction, operation, and relative arrangement of the component parts of my invention are as follows:
In using the wood-chopping ax it is very common to strike over the object aimed at in such a manner f that the force of the stroke is received upon the under side of the handle, thereby often causing the said handle to break off, or otherwise injuring it. It is the object of my invention to obviate this diiculty by providing the handle with the metallic shield A. The said shield is ofthe curvilinear forni clearly illustrated in the drawing, and is so fashioned as to cover only that part of the handle requiring protection, and to add no more in weight to the implement to which it is attached than is positivelyT necessary.
The said shield is provided with the curvilinear wedge-shaped point c, which fits n'eatly between the -handle and the sides of the aperture inthe ax in such a manner as to actas a wedge to assist in holding the parts rmly together, and is secured to the handle by means of a bolt, B, passing" through the apertures D, and a perforation cut for its reception in the said handle.
Having thus described my invention, I will indicate what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the following clause: t
I claim, as a new article of manufacture, the shield A, provided with the curvilinear projection c and apertures D, when constructed and operating as described.
In testimony that Lglaim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 25th day of March,
LARA B. HOIT. [L s] Witnesses:
S. H.' PACKARD, L. CHAPMAN.
