IMPROVEMENT m SA'FETY amen-Ne APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,177, dated July 12, 1870.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, CHARLES COPE- LAND, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and brakein'such a way that, if by any accident the drag-rope or the hoisting machineryshould become broken or deranged, the application of the brake to the pulley, rotated by the safety-rope, willstop its motion, and that of the rope, and thus hold the car and prevent A its running down the incline.
- In addition to the ordinary brake, and to be used in connection with it, or not, as may be desired, the said invention also consists of a water or other fluid cylinder, containing a piston, and furnished with a passage connecting the two ends, in such a manner that a valve in the connecting-passage regulates the rapidity with which the piston may be worked by theobstruction it ofiers to the passage of the water or other fluid, so that the adjustment of the valve regulates the speed of the piston, and fixes the limit at which the car maybe permitted torun down the incline. T0 enable'others skilled in'fthearts to which it appertains to make and use my invention, 1 will'proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawing.
' The car a is attached to the drag-rope,'which I passes'over the pulley b, and thence to the Windlass, operated in the ordinary way by-theengines. The safety-rope is also attached to the car, and passes over suitable pulleys. at the top and bottom of the incline, and also over the pulley c, to which is applied the brake.
When the car is properly attached to the safety-rope the brake is sufficient to enable the car to be held at any point, and if a single turn of the rope has not enough friction to hold, a carrying sheave or pulley on acountershaft may be provided in addition to receive the number of turns required.
' The valved of the safety-cylinder regulates the passage of thewater from end to end of the cylinder, and controls, by the escape of --the water from the alternate sides of the piston, the rotation of the pulley c, and the rate at which the safety-rope and the attached car maybe permitted to travel.
The details of the apparatus may be arranged in adaptation to the circumstances;
but it is preferable, to have a pair of e'ngins-,.
working with a link-motion, and to have the .brake and valve connections leading to the engine-room, so that the whole may be manipulated by a single person.
The water-cylinder should be provided with suitable pipes' for the escape of air, (when air is not used as the resisting 'fluid,) and as stand-pipes to'insure the supply ot water; and the motion or the opening of the valve may 'be regulated by a governor or other automatic apparatus.
The safety-rope, consisting of a supple? -mentary rope that is not used for hoisting,
and which may be connected witha brake or water cylinder,.or' other means by which it may be held at any point, may be applied to an elevator, or other apparatus of which it. may be desired to regulate the motion; and.
in some cases it may be convenient to have .the safety-rope stationary, and to carry the brake or the regulating-cylinder and its adjustable valve upon the moving body; and, in a similar manner,'the' cylinder and valvemay be employed, either with or without the safety-rope, to regulate the motion of an olevator' or any other moving body.
I claimas my-invention 1. The application of a safety-rope, or rope in addition-to the drag-rope or motive power, which may be connected with a brake or other means of regulatingmotion, substantially as described.
2. The safety-cylinder, as described, in combination with an elevator or hoisting apparatus. a
3. A water or other fluid cylinder as the regulator of. the velocity of a moving body, whether the regulating-valve is operated by handlor automatically.
