INVENTOR WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVIN S. MATTIIEVS, OF CINCINNATI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO .lAllIES L. HAVEN, OF AVONDALE, OIIIO.
ELEVATOR-VALVE CONTROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,965, dated April 21, 1891.
Application led November 10, 1890. Serial No. 370,839. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern: are carried to a double-armed lever G, ful- I e it known that I, EDWIN S. MATTHEWS, a crumed at any suitable point g. This lever citizen of the United States, residing at Cin- G connects by a suitable link I t-o the controll c1nnati, in the county of Hamilton and State ling element of the motor.

This, as will be .readily invention, reference being had to the anseen, will take upon one rope and give on the ro neXed drawings, which form part of this speciother, and the lever G will be rocked to move 6o cation. the motor-controlling element. It is a very This invention relates to a device for con desirable construction to move the active trolling the motor of an elevator from the sheaves of each rope together and in the same cage 1n a simple and eiiicient manner; and to direction, as then the slack of one rope will i 5 this end it consists of the apparatus described exactly counterbalance the draw on the other. 65
and claimed in this specification and illus- The preferred construction of sheaves is trated 1n the accompanying drawings, in shown in Fig. Si, in which a pair of idle W111Chsheaves D D are used instead ot a double Figure l is an elevation of an elevator-car idle sheave, and two active sheaves EE inzo with my device applied thereto, the side of stead of a double active sheave. Of course 7o the car being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is the form of the sheave-frame may be varied a plan of one arrangement of the sheaves for so that the same will act as levers of any dcoperating the shifting-rope. This frame between the sheaves, and a handle to move O may be double, as shown,or, of course, may the active sheave to take up one cable and be only a single piece. pay out the other, all substantially as de- In the frame C is fastened the shaft c, and scribed.
4o on the same runs the pair of sheaves or the 2. The combination oi two standing con- 9o double sheave E, having the two grooves c e. trollingcables with an elevator-car having I term the sheaves E active sheaves, inastwo stationary-mounted idle sheaves, two much as by their motion the shifting of the movably-mounted active sheaves, one of said valve or other controlling device is accomcables being passed under 011e of the idle 45 plished. A pair of ropes F and Il are held sheaves and over one ot" the active sheaves and 95 at Z. The rope F comes down the side of the the other cable being passed under the other elevator-cage under sheave D, is crossed at f, active sheave and over the other idle sheave, and then passes over sheave E. The rope I'I whereby the cables are crossed between the passes under sheave E, is crossed at 7L, and idle sheaves and active sheaves, and a han- 50 then passes over sheave D. The two ropes dle to move the active sheaves to take up one roo cable and to pay out the other, all substantially as described.
3. The Combination ot twoV Controlling-oables With an elevator-car having a stationarymounted pair of idle sheaves, a movablymounted pair of active sheaves, one of said Cables being passed under one oi' the idle sheaves and over one of the active sheaves and the other cable being,` passed under the other of the active sheaves and over the other of the idle sheaves, whereby the cables are crossed between the active and the idle sheaves, a frame carrying the active sheaves, and a handle to move said frame and active sheaves to take up one Cable and pay out the other, all substantially as described.
4. The combination of two standing oontrolling-eables, an elevator-ear, a shaft mounted in a bearing on said car, a pair of stationary-mounted idle shea'ves on said shaft, a
frame mounted for oseillation on said sliatt, a pair of movably-niounted active sheaves journaled in said frame, one of said cables being passed under one of the idle sheaves and over one of the active sheaves and the other cable being passed under the other active sheave and over the other idle sheave, whereby the cables are crossed between the idle sheaves and active sheaves, and a handle to rook said frame upon said first-men tioned shaft and move the active sheaves to take up one cable and pay out the other, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence ot' two Witnesses.
