BUTT-CHISEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED STONE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butt-Chisels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to chisels of the type known as butt Chisels, and has for its purpose to provide a device of that character which may be readily adjusted and secured within position for cutting predetermined depths in doors and door frames, whereby to secure absolute accuracy in fitting hinges to the required position, and thereby avoiding the disadvantages attending the present method of first marking with a gage the thickness of the hinge on the door, or door frame, and then carefully paring down to the gage mark.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a butt chisel wherein the work of the character mentioned may be done with rapidity and in which the gage carried by the chisel will in no manner interfere with the working of the tool.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the viewsz Figure 1 is an elevational view of the butt chisel showing its manner of application; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same taken on the line 3' 3 of Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of a detail of a proposed modified construction.
Referring to the construction in detail, 1 designates the chisel which is provided with a dove-tailed channel-way 2 running lengthwise of the blade thereof, and through the medium of which a gage is Secured and adapted for adjustment. The gage consists of a bar 3 of any suitable material, preferably metal, and which has intermediate Specification of Letters Iatent.

its ends an offset portion 4, providing a spacing member and a recess, for purposes to be presently explained. On its res ective ends, the bar 3 is constructed with ofl' etting portions. 5 and 6, on which are adjustably mounted rests or supports 7 and 8, respectively. The means for adjustably securing the rests or supports 7 and 8 consists of a screw-threaded bolt 9 carried by the adjustable member and working within a slot 10 in the offset portion. A wing nut 11 is screw-threaded on the bolt 9, and through the medium .of which the adjustable member is set and secured to the required position. The adjustable member is cut away for an appreciable depth, such as that indicated by the character X, to receive the offset member, to the end that relative turning movement is prevented between the offset member and the adjustable member. Each of the adjustable members 7 and 8 is further provided with an extension or projecting portion 12, which is adapted to be set 1n advance of the cutting edge of the chisel when the tool is being used with the gage, as in that manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. The depth to which the chisel is designed to cut is determined by the position at which the rests or supports 7 and 8 are set, and this position may, of course, be determined at will by the adjustment of said members on the members 5 and 6 of the gage bar 3. The bar 3 is prevented from offering any hindrance to the working of the chisel when the rests 7 and 8 are in engagement with the piece being worked, since the same is spaced therefrom through the medium of the ofisetting portion 4, as above stated.
The bar 3 is adapted to be adjusted lengthwise of the chisel blade through the medium of a dove-tailed head 13, which fits and works within the dove-tailed channel-way 2 of the chisel blade. Said dove-tailed head 13 has a. shank portion 14 fitting within a similarly designed aperture in the offset portion 4 of the bar, and said shank has a screw threaded portion 15 which is fitted with a wing nut 16, through the medium of which the dove-tailed head is secured to hold the bar 3 in the position to which said bar is set. The wing nut 16 is located within the recess or space provided by the offset portion 4 and in this position is prevented from offering any obstruction as would otherwise be the case if said wing nut were more prominently exposed.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the blade of the chisel l is constructed with a projecting portion 17 of dove-tailed cross section, as distinct from having a dovetailed groove formed therein, as in that construction shown in Fig. 1. Said dove-tailed portion 17 fits within a complementary de signed groove 18 formed in the offset portion 4 of the gage bar 3, and is adapted to move therein. A thumb nut 19 is carried by the gage bar and impinges against the clovetailed portion 17, as shown, and through the medium of which the desired adjustment of the gage bar is secured.
In the use of the chisel for ordinary work, the gage bar 3 would be moved toward the upper end of the channel and secured, and in that position the rests or supports 7 and 8 would ofler no obstruction to the cutting edge of the chisel blade. I/Vhen, however, the tool is being used with the gage as for the purpose heretofore stated, and bar 3 is moved into substantially that position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and then secured. The rests or supports 7 and 8 are then set for cutting to the depth desired, and the tool is in condition for use.
Instead of the dove-tailed locking elements, as shown herein, the device may with equal advantage be used with an ordinary V-shaped groove formed in the side edges of a square chisel. Also, the cross bar could be provided with set screws for gaging the depth instead of using the sliding rests or supports.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is 1. In a butt chisel, the combination of a chisel having a dove-tailed locking element; a bar; a dove-tailed head carried by said bar and having adjustable engagement lengthwise of the chisel with the dove-tailed element of said chisel; and members adj ustably mounted on the ends of said bar, substantially as described.
2. In a butt chisel, the combination of a chisel; a bar having an offset and transversely disposed intermediate portion; an adjustable connection between said offset portion of the bar and the chisel; and members adjustably mounted on the ends of said bar, substantially as described.
3. In a butt chisel, the combination of a chisel; a bar having an offset and transversely disposed intermediate portion and parallel offsetting end portions; an adjustable connection between said ofiset intermediate portion of the bar and the chisel; and members adjustably mounted on the offset end portions of said bar, substantially as described.
4. In a butt chisel, the combination of a chisel having a dove-tailed channel; a bar having an offset intermediate portion forming a spacing member and a recess; a dovetailed head carried by the offset portion of said bar and adjustable within said channel; a winged nut on said dove-tailed head for securing said bar in adjusted position; a pair of adjustable members located at the respective ends of said bar; and winged nuts for securing the dove-tailed head and said members in adjusted position, substantially as described.
