RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Janes, 1913.
Application led August 23, 1912. Serial No. 716,757.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that-I, FRANK VENCHES, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Holden, in the county of Logan and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, .reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the objects of my invention are to provide novel splice-bars for connecting the confronting or abutting ends of rails whereby said rails cannot become longitudinally or vertically displaced.
Further objects of my Vinvention are to rovide a strong and durable joint consist- -ing of comparatively few parts that can b'e easily and quickly assembled by unskilled labor, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction thatI is inexensive to manufacture and highly ellieient or connecting the ends of rails.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the dr-.iwing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rail joint. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with one splice bar removed. Fig. 3 is a cross scctional view of the rail joint. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the splice-bars thereof, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the end of a rail in accordance with this invention'.
The reference numerals 1 denote rails having the webs 2, at the ends of said rails, provided with side enlargements 3 having the innerends thereof beveled, as at 4. The base lianges 5 of the rails are cut away, as at 6 beneath the side enlargements of said rails. Bracin'g the sides of the railsA 1, at the ends thereofnare splice-bars 7 and said splice-bars have the inner sides thereof cut away, asat 8 to accommodate the side enlargements 3 of said rails. The cut away portions 8 of the splice-bars 7 have inclined or beveled end walls 9 that engage the beveled ends 4 of the side enlargements and assist in preventing longitudinal and vertical displacement of said rails. The outer sides of the splice-bars 7 are enlarged, as at 10 to strengthen and re-inforce said splicebars, and the lower' edges of said splice-bars, intermediate the ends thereof, are provided with integral base plates 11. The hase plates 11 lit in thei cut away portions 6 of.
the base anges 5 and coperate in supporting the webs 2 and the side enlargements 3 thereof.4 The base plates 11 have transversely alining openings 12 to receive bolts 13 upon which there are screwed nuts 14 for locking the base'plates 11 and the splice-bars 7 in engagement with the rails l.
What I claim is In a rail joint, the combination with rails having the webs thereof provided with side enlargements, the outer ends of said side enlargements being beveled, and the base flanges of y'said rails cut away beneath the side enlargements thereof, of splice-bars bracing the sides of said rails, said splicebars having the inner sides thereof cut away to receive the side enlargements of said rails, the cut away portions of said splice-bars presenting beveled end walls for engaging the beveled outer ends of the side enlargements of said rails, base plates formed integral with the lower edges of said splice-bars and fitting in the cut away portionsY of the base fianges of said rails, said base plates having transverse alining openings formed therein, bolts extending through the openings of said base plates, and nuts screwed upon said bolts.
In testimonywhereof I ax my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
