GEORGE O. WOOD, OF DANIEL SON, CONNECTICUT.
LOCKING WHIP-SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1913.
Application filed September 17, 1912. Serial No. 720,850.
To all whom 2'25 may concern."
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. \Voon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danielson, in the county of Windham and. State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking lVhip-Sockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in whip sockets and more particularly to a locking whip socket which can be readily attached to a whip socket of any usual, well known construction, the object of the invention being to provide a whip socket in which the whip may be securely locked to prevent the removal thereof by unauthorized persons.
Another object of the invention is to provide a locking whip socket which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a whip socket constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of thelocking cam. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the key.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates a whip socket, the lower end of which is open to admit the upper end of the locking attachment 2. The upper end of the locking attachment 2 is securely fastened to the lower end of the socket 1 by means of the bolts 3, whereby the locking attachment may be quickly and easily attached or detached from the socket. Arranged within the locking attachment and extending upwardly into the socket are the bowed spring rods 4, the intermediate portions of which are pivotally mounted between the ears 5 formed upon the body of the locking attachment adjacent the upper end thereof. The spring rods 4 are provided upon their upper ends with the curved arms 6 adapted to engage the whip 7 above acent the lower end thereof and securely fastened thereto by means of the bolts 9 is a circular whip base 10 upon which the lower end of the whip t is adapted to rest when arranged within the socket. Arranged between the lower ends of the arms 1 and pivotally mounted upon the hollow pivot pin 11 a locking cam 12 adapted to be rotated to lock the arms 6 in position or to release the same from the stock of the whip. Formed integral with the pivot pin 11 and arranged within the same is a substantially flat longitudinal member 13. A key 14 is provided, the end of which is bifurcated to form two spaced semicircular arms 15 adapted to be arranged upon each side of the member 13 so that when the key is inserted within the hollow pivot pin 11. and turned, the cam 12 will rotate with the turning movement of the key. Secured to the base 10 and at the lower ends of the rods 1 are the coil springs 16 which are adapted to retain the arms in an open position when the rods are unlocked by means of the cam 12.
It will be readily apparent from the above that when the cam 12 is disposed in a vertical position the arms 6 will be in an open position so that the butt end of the whip may be readily inserted into the locking member or removed therefrom. After the whip has been arranged within the looking member, the cam 12 by means of the key 13 will be arranged in a horizontal position forcing the lower ends of the rods 4: outwardly and engaging the arms 6 with the stock of the whip above the band 8 so as to entirely prevent the removal of the whip from the socket. In order to release the whip from the socket, the cam 12 will be turned by means of the key it so that the same will be arranged in a vertical position, the coil springs 16 forcing the arms 6 away from the stock of the whip so as to allow the same to be readily removed.
From the above description taken in 0011- nection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a durable and eiiicient whip socket whereby a whip may be securely locked therein to prevent the removal of the same by unauthorized persons.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. In combination with a whip socket,
of a locking attachment including a body, bowed spring rods pivotally mounted within said body, curved arms secured to the upper ends of said rods and adaptedto engage the butt of the whip stock, a base member arranged between the rods adjacent the lower ends thereof, a locking cam pivotally mounted between the lower ends of said rods, means for rotating said cam to engage and disengage the arms from the butt of the whip stock, and coil springs having one. of their ends secured to the base and their other ends secured to the lower ends of the rods to retain the rods in an open position when the cam is unlocked.
2. In combination with a whip socket, of a locking attachment including a body secured to the lower end of the socket, bowed spring rods pivotally mounted within said body and arranged in a vertical position, curved spring arms secured to the upper ends of said rods, a base member secured to the body and arranged between the rods adjacent the lower ends thereof, a hollow pivot rod arranged between the lower ends of said rods, a locking cam carried thereby, a substantially fiat longitudinal member formed integral with the pivot rod and arranged within the same, a key having its outer end bifurcated to form two spaced semicircular arms adapted to be arranged upon each side of said member whereby the turning movement of the key will rotate the locking cam to engage and disengage the curved arms from the butt of the whip stock.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE O. WOOD.
