DAVID M. TYLER, OF UNION TOWNSHIP, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 105,143, dated July 5, 1870.
mrnovnmnm m Pence The Schedule memo to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID M. TYLER, of Union township, in the county of La Porte and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing makinga part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 show two modifications of my improvements.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is an improvement in the construction of fences composed of both wood and iron and It consists in [the peculiar form and attachment of the vertical iron rods to each other and to the horizontal rails, as is hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawing- A and A represent the posts, having secured to and extending between the same three horizontal 'rails B, O, and 'D. I
Secured within and extending upward from equi distant points upon the upper side of the bottom rail D, are anumber of rods of wire, E, which, passing upward through the middle and upper rails G and B, respectively, are'each curved to one side, and, passing downward, have their ends secured within said top rail immediately in rear of the next adjoining wire.
Starting from or'within the lower .rail D, midway between the wires E, is a second set of wires, F, which pass upward through the middle rail 0, and curving to one side, are secured within said rail in the same manner as are those before described.
As thus constructed, the panels are exceedingly strong, are not liable to get out of order, and present a very attractive appearance, while costing but a trifle more than the most common picket-fence.
In fig. 2 is shown a modification of my improvement, in which the middle rail is omitted, and the short set-of wires F, passing each from therear of one of the long wire's'E to the front of the next following, have their short ends securedt to the next adjoining short wire by means of a metal thimble or acorn, G,
surrounding said end and wire.
This modification is, perhaps, preferable,'as it dispenses with onerail and the cost of keeping the samein repair, and substitutes in place thereof a set pf thimbles having greater durability and strength, and which may be constructed in a very ornamental style.
Having thus fully set my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is v The hereinbefore-described fence, consisting of the posts A, the railsB and D, and the wire-pickets E and F, secured together as shown, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing, I have here unto set my hand this 19th day of February, 1870.
DAVID- M. TYLER.
