, Be it known that I, ALsrn'r E. 111321, a citizen of the United States, residin at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, tate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new .amlusefulv Improvements in Photograph- Printing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to photograph printing device s. v The object of my invention is to provide a novel, simple and efficient printing device whereby light may be thoroughly diffused before passing through the ne ative in making photographicprints under conditions requiring a thorough diffusion of the light, such for example, as the conditions under which vignetted photographic prints are made.
A further object of my invention is to provide. a novel means whereby the printing 1 paper may be rapidly applied to and removed from the device.
-A further object of my invention is to provide a novel means for holding negatives in different positions relatively to the paper holding devices and to the vignetting devices. :A further object of my invention is to provide a novel means for quickly changing the'vignetting devices to meet various requirements.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Arranged adjacent the forward face of the frame 3 is an L-shaped negative support 8 comprising a vertical member 9 outwardly of one side of the opening 5 and a horizontal member 10 below or outwardly of the bottom of the opening 5. This L-shaped negative support 8 is movable toward and from the forward face of the frame 3, and it is supported by two flat bow springs 11 and 12-, which embrace one side of the frame The rearward end of the spring 11 is secured to the rearward face of the frame I} by screws 13, and the forward end of the spring 11 is secured to the forward face of the vertical member 9 of the negative support 8 by screws 14. The rearwardend of the spring 12 is secured to the rearward face of the frame 3 by screws 15, and the forward end of the spring 12 is secured to the forward face of the horizontal member- 10, 01 the negative support 8 by screws 16. These springs 11 and 12 normally press the negative support 8 toward the forward.

Arranged adjacent the forward face of the glass 7 and also the forward face of the negative 17 is a contact board 18, one side of which is adjacent the inner side of the vertical member 9 of the negative support 8, and the bottom of which is adjacent the upper face of the horizontal member 10 of the negative support 8, as shown. The upper edge of the contact board 18 is secured to the downwardly-extending plates 19 of hinges 20, the upwardly-extending plates 21 of which are arranged adjacent the forward face of the frame 3 above the contact board 18. These hinges are held in place against vertical and lateral displacement by screws 22 extending through the plates 21 and into the frame 3; and these hinges 20 and therewith the upper end of the contact board 18 are pressed yieldingly toward the forward face of the frame 3 by suitable Patented Jan. 28, 1913. g
Secureo to the lower central portion of the contact board 18 by screws 2 1, is the up per end of a flat spring arm 25, the lower portion of which is bowed outwardly, as shown. This arm 25 extends over the horizontal member 10 of the negative support 8 and below the bottom thereof, and the lower end of the arm 25 is engaged by a latch member :20, which is pivoted, at 27, to a bracket 28 on the frame 3. This latch member 26 pressed normally toward the lower end of the arm by a suitable spring 29 interposed between the bottom of the member 26 and the bracket 28. Normall the distance between the frame 3 and the lower end of the arm 25 is greater than that shown in the drawings, and it will therefore be understood that when the lower end of the arm 25 is pressed toward the frame 3 and engaged by the latch member 26, the lower end of the contact board 18 will be pressed to Ward the frame 3 or negative 17 by the spring action of the arm 25, the member .26 forming a retaining catch holding the contact board 18 in the closed position shown in the drawings.
The paper upon which the photographs are printed is adapted to be inserted between the contact board 18 and the negative 17, and the paper is pressed firn'ily into engagement with the negative 17 by the'pressure of the springs and 2?, when the contact board 18 is closed.
Secured to the top of the frame 3 by means of a screw 30 is the upper end of a fiat spring 31 extending forwardly and downwardly over the forward face of the contact board 18. The lower end of the spring 3] is inserted into the space between a bar or bracket and the forward face of the contact board 18, the ends of the bar or bracket being secured to the contact board 18 by screws 3?. This spring 31 exerts an outward and an upward pressure upon the bracket 32 and perforce the contact board 18. It will therefore be seen that when the latch member or retaining catch 26 is moved on the pivot 27 againstthe action of the spring 29 to disengage it from the arm 25, the spring 31 will raise the contact board 18 on the hinges 20. The power of the spring 31 is sullicient to raise the contact board 18 from the vertical position shown in the drawings to a horizontal position, or substantially so.
From the construction thus far described, it will be seen that the negative 17 may be adjusted to bring any portion thereof, for example, the head of a person on the negative toward or from the inner edge of the vertical member 9 of the negative support- 8, and toward or from the upper or inner edge of the horizontal member 10' of the negative support 8. The inner edge of the member 5) and the upper edge of the mem her 10 form stops for the left hand edge and the bottom edge of the printing paper inserted between the contact board 18 and negative 17, and it will thus be seen that the printing paper may be quickly and properly positioned with relation to the portion of the negative desired to be printed each time the contact board 18 is open and the print ing paper inserted in printing a number of similar photographs. 1
In operating the printing device, the handle (3 is grasped in one hand, the thumb of which may be used upon the arm 34- of the latch member 26 to move it downwardly to release the arm 25 and permit the contact board 18 to be raisedby the spring 31, while the other hand of the operator may be used to successively insert sheets of the printing paper, and also to lower the contact board 18 and reengage the arm 25 with the latch 26 after the insertion of each sheet of paper. The arm 25 is re'e ngaged with the latch :26 by merely pressing it over the frame 3, the lower end of the arm 25 acting upon the beveled face 35 of the latch 26 and forcing it downwardly against the action of the spring 29 until the arm 25 reaches the position shown, whereupon the spring 29 will move the'latch 26 into engagement with the arm 25.
The L-shaped negative support 8 not only serves as a stop to properly position the printing paper with respect to the negative 17, but it also provides for the quick discharge of the paper after the print has been made, for the reason that if the frame 3 be tilted to one side after the print has been made and the contact board 18 raised, the printing paper will readily slide of? of the right hand side of :1 frame 3 into any suitable receptacle, the hand of the operator not engaged w h the handle (3 may be em iloyed in picking up another sheet of printing paper to be in ted between the contact board 18 and negative 17.
Formed on or secured to the rearward face of the frame 3 and extending around three sides of the opening 5, is supplemental frame 36 having an undercut groove 37 therein, forming a guide adapted to receive a vignetting glass 38 and a substantially opaque vignetting board 39, the glass 3S and board 39 being arranged face to face and inserted into the guides 37 from the open side of the frame 36. The glass 38 and board 39 extend over the rearward side of the opening 5 and are retained in place within the guides 37 by a retainer 40 formed of flat spring metal and having its outer portion secured to the frame 3 by screws 41 and its inner portion 42 bent to extend over the frame 3 and to engage the glass 38 and board 39. The frame 8 is provided with a suitable ,opening therein to receive the bent end as of the member 40 and permit the same to be pressed toward the frame 3 and out of engagement with the adjacent edges of the glass 38 and board 39 to permit them to be withdrawn from the guides 37 through the open side of the frame 36. The glass 38 is made translucent, and for this purposeI provide the glass 38 with a suitable coating of porcelain 43. The vignetting board 39 is provided with an opening 44 therein smaller than the opening 5 of the frame 3 and arranged opposite the head or other object on the negative 17 desired to be vignetted when printed. The translucent glass 38 is arranged in spaced relation to the ne a tive 17, and I have found that the trans ucent glass of the character herein described, will permit light to pass through the opening 5 for the printing operation and yet so diffuse or scatter the light as to produce a very soft desirable vignette. By depressing the retainer 40 the vignetting board 39 may be removed and anothervignetting board having a different shaped opening therein or a differently positioned o ning therein may be substituted to meet di er'ent requirements.
I claim 1. In a photograph printing device, the
combination of a frame having an opening therein, a contact 'board movable toward and from said opening, clamping means for said board, a negative support outwardly of said board and having a negative engaging face movable toward and from said frame, and a spring having one part secured to said frame and another part secured to said suport and pressing said face toward said rame and guiding said support when moved toward or from said frame.
2. In a photograph printing device, the combination of a frame having an opening therein, a contact board movable toward and from said opening, clamping means for said board, an L-shaped negative support on said frame outwardly of said board adjacent two walls of the opening in the frame and having a negative-engaging face movable toward and from said frame, and yielding mean. pressing said face toward said frame.
3. In a photograph printing device, the combination of a frame having an openin therein, a contact board movable towar and from said opening, a hinge connecting one edge of said board to said frame, an arm extending from the o posite ed e of said board, a retaining catch on said rame and engaging said arm, a negative support extending between said board and said catch and having a negative-engaging face movable toward and from said frame, and yielding means pressing said face toward said frame.
4. In a photograph printing device, the combination of a frame having an openin therein, a contact board movable toward and from said opening, clamping means for said board, means for supporting a negative between one face of said frame and said board and adjacent said opening, a translucent glass, a vignette board adjacent said glass and having an opening therein smaller than the opening in said frame, and means for supporting said glass-and said vignette board adjacent the frame opening and in spaced relation to the negative.
5. In -a photograph printing device, the combination of a frame having an o'penin therein, a contact board movable toward and from said opening, clamping means for said board, means for supporting a negative between one face of said frame and said board and adjacent said opening, a glass provided with a translucent, porcelain coating, 21 vignette board adjacent said glass and having an opening therein smaller than the opening in said frame, and means for supporting said glass and said vignette board adjacent the frame opening and in spaced relation to the negative.
