To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that we, SYDNEY WOOD and DONALD FERGUSON BURRAGE, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment Stretchers and Hangers, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to that type of trousers stretcher having a telescopic rod the two parts of which may be pulled apart by hand to produce the necessary stretching.

The object of the present invention is to simplify the construction of such apparatus and to render it more convenient in use.

One of the clamps may be of such a shape that it will act as a coat carrier and both clamps are so constructed that they may be rapidly opened and closed and may be adjusted to take various thicknesses of trousers or more than one pair of trousers.

The apparatus is also preferably pro-vided with means for supporting a hat and with means whereby it may be suspended from a peg or from the top of a door.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation parts being omitted, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the upper part of the apparatus drawn to the same scale as Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the other end of the apparatus. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of part of the stretching device. Fig. 5 is an end view of one of the clamps and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the clamping members.

The telescopic rod is made of two pieces of metal b, b1, of square channel section, the part b1 tting within the part b. The pawl b4 is pivoted to the part o and engages the rack b2, which is riveted or otherwise fixed to the Vpart b1.

Each clamp consists of two parts a, al, hinged together at a, and the upper clam, is so curved that it may be conveniently used for carrying a coat or like garment. It will be observed that the upper clamp is provided with a curved part a3 to fit the shoulders or top of a coat or like garment. The parts a and a3 of the upper clamp are bored to receive a wire, part of which, c1, acts as a hat peg, as seen in Figs. l and 2. The part a of the upper clamp has a. short slot a5 into which the hat peg 01 enters when the peg is turned at right angles to the plane of its clamp. For packing, t-he peg c1 is withdrawn from the slot a5 and is turned into the plane of the clamp, as seen in Fig. l. It will be noticed that the ring c2 is in the same plane as the peg 01. The apparatus may be suspended by the ring c2 being placed over a nail, or by the claw c3 which may be placed on top of a door. The part a of each clamp is of channel section or grooved, and the walls of the groove are rounded so that they will not damage the trousers or mark them to any great degree` Each clamp is 'secured after it has been closed by a screw a carried by the part al. The top a7 of the screw a6 is bent at a right angle to the main part of the screw so that it may pass through a slot as in the part a of the clamp. After the head a7 of the screw has passed through the slot as, it is turned at an angle to the slot and thus retains the two parts of clamp in their clamping position. The screw as may be screwed more or less into the part al to accommodate various thicknesses of cloth. The clamps are each connected to the two parts b, b1, of the telescopic rod by means of a slotted plate b5 arranged at a certain distance from the channel member portion of the rods and consisting of a prolongation of the bottom wall of the channel member. rEhe parts a1 are each formed to fit at one part between the plate b5 and the end of the channel member as shown at Figs. 2 and 3. The parts al are each provided with a screw a which fits the slot in the plate 225 and is secured therein by a binding nut 0,10.

We claim as our invention:

1. In a trousers-stretcher, the combination of two square channel members one fitting within the other, a rack iiXed along the interior of the inner channel member, a pawl pivoted to the upper part of the walls of the outer channel member and engaging the said rack, a slotted plate carried by a prolongation of the bottom wall of each channel member and arranged at a certain distance from the end of each channel member, two clamps each having a part located between one slotted plate and the end of the channel member, a screw carried by each clamp and passing through one of the slotted plates, and a nut on each screw for fixing the clamps in position, substantially as set forth.

2. In a trousers-stretcher, the combination of two square channel members one fitting within the other, a rack fixed along the interior of the inner channel member, a pawl pivoted to t-he upper parts of the walls of the outer channel member and engaging the said rack, a slotted plate carried by a prolongation of the bottom wall of each channel member and arranged at a certain distance from the end of each channel member, two clamps each having a part located between the slotted plate andthe end of the channel member, a screw carried by each clamp and passing through the slotted plate, a nut on each screw for fixing each clamp, the end of one member of each clamp being slotted, a screw carried by the end lof the other member of each clamp and passing through the slotted member, and a part of the screw bent at right angles to the main part to keep the clamp closed, substantially as set forth.

3. In a trousers-stretcher, the combination of two square channel members one fitting within the other, a rack carried by one member and a pawl carried by the other member, a slotted plate carried by a prolongation of the bottom wall of each channel member, two clamps each consisting of two parts hinged together at one end, one part being grooved and the walls of the groove being rounded, each clamp having a screw which passes through the Said slotted plate and a nut on said screw by which the clampis fixed, substantially as Set forth.

4L. In a trousers-stretcher, the combination of two square channel members, one fitting within the other, a pawl carried by one channel member and a rack carried by the other channel member, a slotted plate carried by an extension of the bottom wall of Veach channel member, a clamp located between each slotted plate and the channel member, a screw carried by one member of each clamp passing through the said slotted plate, a nut on said screw by which the clamp is fixed, each clamp consisting of a grooved part and a part fitting within said groove, said parts being hinged together at one end, one part having a slotted end, a screw carried by the end of the other part, said screw passing through the said slotted end and having a part bent at right angles to keep the clamp closed, substantially as set forth.
