To aU whom t may concern Be it known that I, LAWRENCE D. MoR- ToN, a citizen of the United States of America', residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilated Boxes or Cartons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

It is the object of the invention to provide a means of Ventilating boxes or cartons such for instance as are used in the shipment of fruits, small live stock, etc. and at the same time'to maintain the security and heat insulating properties of the package.

To this end the invention consists in the novel construction of a ventilated shield and further in the manner of applying the same to the box or carton as hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box or carton in open position to which my improvement is applied; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the closed position; Fig. 3 is a cross section substantially on line :z2- x Fig. 1; Fig. i is a cross section through a modified construction; Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on line y-y, Fig. 4L; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view illustrating another modification.

A is a box or carton which is. preferably formed as shown, of double faced corrugated paper board, and B is a detachable cover formed of similar material.

As shown, in Fig. 1, my improved ventilating shield is applied to the cover B and to this end the latter is provided with a series of openings C formed through the top thereof.

D is the Ventilating shield which is formed of currugated paper or other suitable material and is applied to cover the opening C. This shield is preferably applied to the outer face of tbe cover and extends beyond the edges of the opening C, preferably terminating inside of the edge of the receptacle as indicated in Fig. 2. Thus a series of air passages are formed between the shield and the cover which communicate with the apertures C and provide the necessary ventilation.

As the corrugated paper is lacking in strength and could easily be crushed down or torn so as to defeat the lobject of the invention, I preferably employ a faced corrugated board. This material is formed with Specification of Letters Patent.

each of the corrugations of the strip E secured by an adhesive to the outer facing strip F producing a structure having a con siderable degree of strength. Furthermore, the outer facing sheet F forms a smooth exterior for the carton.

The Ventilating shield may be applied to any box or package and formed of any suitable material, and in Fig. 6 it is shown as applied to a wooden box G having an opening I-I therein which is covered by a shield D. I preferably however, apply the shield to cartons formed of double faced corrugated board as shown in Figs. 1 to 5, and in such structures the shield D performs the further function of a reinforcement for the wall of the carton. On account of the slight thickness of the material the dimensions of the package are not materially increased.

In use, the cartons may be packed with fruit or other perishable material which may be preserved by proper ventilation, or they may be used for the shipment of small chickens or other small animals. For the latter use, it is very essential to protect the animals from cold, which is accomplished as the faced corrugated board forms a good heat insulator. Furthermore, ventilation is obtained without the production of a strong draft which would tend to chill and thereby injure the animals. 1

The shield is secured in position preferably by gluing the corrugations of the face of the apertured wall.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. A package comprising a carton having one wall thereof apertured, and a ventilating shield formed of corrugated paper board covering said aperture and secured to the carton.

2. A package comprising a carton having one wall thereof apertured, and a ventilating shield covering said aperture formed of single faced corrugated paper board, secured to the carton with the corrugated side engaging said apertured wall.
