A. G. SNYDER. GHAFE IRON.
y Y APPLICATION FILED PBB.3, 1912.

AUGUSTUS G. SNYDER, OF UTIGA, NEW YORK.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1913.
Application filed February 3, 1912. Serial No. 675,188.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS G. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Chafe- Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in chafe-irons, for wheeled vehicles, of that class having rotating chafing or wearing surfaces; and the invention has for its object to provide a device of this character which can be manufactured at comparatively little expense, which will be efficient in use, and in which the construction is such that the rotating chafing or wearing part will not rattle.
To this end the improved chafe-iron comprises a body portion consisting of a single piece of heavy sheet metal having a cutout part which is folded over onto the other part and properly shaped to form hollow cars for the reception of the pintles of the roller, the outer ends of the chambers of the said hollow ears being closed by caps which are integral with the said sheet metal body portion and which are bent over the ends of said chambers, thus forming a neat finish. One or more coil springs acting on the roller will prevent the same from rattling.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of the improved chafe-iron. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with one ear partly broken away, and Fig. 3 is a similar View of a slightly different form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a sheet metal plate or body portion partly cut away and having an integral folded-over portion 13, the end parts of the doubled portion being shaped to form the hollow ears 14 which receive the pintles 15 or 15 of the roller 16. The said folded-over portion 13 is permanently attached to the body portion 12, as by rivets 17. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 this will be done after the roller 16 has been mounted in place. The outer ends of the chambers of the said hollow ears are preferably closed by integral caps 18 bent over the ends of said ears and affording a neat finish. A friction coil spring 19, located in one of the hollow ears and bearing against a pintle of the roller, holds the latter with suflicient firmness to prevent the same from rattling, while permitting it to turn with proper friction when in engagement with a vehicle wheel. A spring 19 may be located in each of the hollow ears 14, if desired. The body 12 is provided with slots or openings 20 for the reception of the attaching bolts.
In the form of the invention-shown in Fig. 3 the pintles of the roller 16 consist of pins 15 mounted in the hollow ears 14:, and held in place by the caps 18. In this construction the roller is provided at its ends with recesses 20 for the reception of the inner ends of said pins and for the spring or springs 19 which act on the roller to prevent the same from rattling.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides a chafe-iron which is inexpensive to make, and which embodies all of the desirable features in a device of this kind. It will, of course, be understood that the details of the device may be varied somewhat without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The improved chafe iron herein described the body of which consists of a single piece of sheet metal a portion of which is folded over to form integral hollow ears the outer ends of which are closed by integral caps bent inward over said ends, combined with a roller mounted in said ears.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS G. SNYDER.
Witnesses: M. L. Rown, J. D. MORLEY.
