To all whom it may concern county of Camden, and State of New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Cutters for Reproducing- Styli, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a simple and efficient device for cut ting or rev-sharpening sound reproducing made of vegetable in a cutter an improved adjustable cutting blade, and improved means for holding a stylus in position to he acted upon by the blade; and to provide other improvements.

Referring to the drawings, one embodiment of this invention comprises a fiat rigid base 1 projecting upwardly from which, and integral or rigid therewith, is a standard 2. fiber, or other similar materiel; to provide through the upper portion of the standard and its bosses and forrns a bearing in which snugly or rigidly engages a. pivot 13, the outer end of which is provided with a slotted head 14: which engages against the adjacent end surface of the outer boss 10. The inner end of the pivot 13 projects beyond the inner boss l1 and is reduced in diameter as at 15 to form an annular shoulder 16 just outside of the inner boss 11, and is threaded into the blade lever 3, the shoulder 16 being turned up tightly against the adjacent face of the blade lever to hold the pivot rigid with respect to the blade lever so that as the blade lever oscillates, the pivot will rock in its bearing.
The blade 4 may be of any well known or suitable construction, the form of e. fist tempered steel plate hounded by a plurality of sharp cutting edges 20 forming a regular polygon, in this instance a hexagon, the cutting edges bein formed by beveling the margin of the his. e only upon the side of'the blade that is not in contact with the shearing plate. The blade is preferably pivoted upon a screw 21, which extends loosely through an aperture .22 provided therefor'in the central portion [of the blade.
The inner end of the screw is threaded through the blade lever and, the outer end of the screw is provided with a .head 23 which engages against the outer sur rigidly against the blade lever to hold the blade fixed with respect to the lever. For

For holding a stylus during the cutting operation, the feed block 7 is provided upon its upper surface with a groove 30. extending obliquely entirely across the feed block, and rectangular or of any other suitable shape in cross section. The bottom wall 31 of the groove 30 is preferably inclined downwardlytoward the plane of the blade and the side walls 32 of the groove are preferably vertical and oblique to the'plane of the blade. This groove is adapted to hold a stylus 33 of fiber or other similar material triangular in cross section and having a reproducing point 34, such as is shownin Fig.
in position to be resharpened by the blade 4. The shearing plate 5 is preferably made of steel and is provided with an aperture '35 to permit adjustment of the screw v 21 upon which the blade 4 is pivoted, and
this aperture is extended to form a continuation of the inner end of the slot 30 for holding the stylus in position. The reproducing end of the stylus is, therefore, held in place during the cutting action by the Walls of the aperture 30 in the shearing plate. For positioning a stylus 33 longitudinallyin the groove 30, the blade lever 3 is provided with'a lug or stop 36 integral therewith, which has a forwardly offset lower portion having a front vertical surface 37 spaced slightly in the rear of the plane of the cutting edges of the blade and.
depending in the path of the stylus'and arranged to engage against the reproducing point 34 of the stylus when the blade lever 3 is in its uppermost position and the stylus is in position to be sharpened or acted upon by the blade, 'and also preferably. to be moved out of contactwith the stylus as the blade lever descends and before the blade engages the stylus.- For limiting the oscillation of the blade lever 3, the shearing plate 5 is provided with a segmentalslot 40, coaxial with the axis of oscillation of the lever, and a screw extends loosely through the slot and is threaded into the lever. For holding the blade 4 always snugly but yieldingly against the shearing plate 5, the inner end of. he inner boss 11 of the standard 2 is reduced in diameter to form an annular shoulder 45 and a cylindrical bearing 46. Fitting loosely over this cylindrical bearing 46 and engaging against the shoulder 45 is a tempered steel or other resilient washer 47 in the form of a spider, having spring arms 48 integral therewith and projecting radially and forwardly therefrom. The free ends of the spring arms 48 normally press against the outer surface of a washer 49, preferably of fiber or other similar material, loosely surrounding the bearing 46 and the inner surface 7 which is pressed by the spring arms of the spider against the outer surface of the blade lever 3, thus forcing the blade lever and the blade carried thereby, toward the shearing plate 5, and keeping the inner surface of the blade always snugly in engagement with the outer 'surface'of the shearing plate.
For receiving the chips-or ends of the styli that fall from the lads during the operation of this device, a tray 50 may be secured upon the base 1 in a suitable position below the blade, and to prevent injury of any table or support upon which the device may be mounted the under surface of the base 1 may be coveredwith a layer 51, of felt or other suitable material.
It is thought that the operation of this device will be apparent from the foregoing description. Although only a single form has been shown in which this invention may be embodied, the invention is not limited to any specific construction, but may be applied in various forms without departing from the spirit of the invent-ion or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim and desire to protect by Letters Pat: ent of the United States:
1. A cutter including a fixed member, a blade lever connected to said fixed member to oscillate about a fixed axis, a fixed shearing plate, a blade carried by said leverand slidably engaging said shearing plate and yielding means holding said blade in en.- gagement with said shearing plate, said yielding means being arranged coaxially with the axis of movement of said lever.
