Theohject had in View in making this invention was the production of a very cheap, and, at the same time,l a very durable saddle, mainly for use iu districts like the southern and south-western parts ofthe United States, where horseback riding is the chief` means of locomotiomg and where most of rthe inhabitants' are very-poor; To this end,

The invention consists in a saddle whose skirts are made of a foundation of split, t'. e., the portion that remains after the surface of leather has been taken off by splitting, and which is rough and generally unt for the uses to which leather is put, and a covering of enameled muslin, drill, duck, o1' hcgskin, all which materials fulfill the the necessary conditions of cheapnessand durability.- Y
