have `invented a new ancl'.\'ali1ablc Improvement in BridleBits; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full,l clear, andexact` description ofthe con-` struction and operation of the same, reference .being had-totheannexed drawings `making a part of this. specification, and to the letters and figuresof refererence marked thereon;v l r `Figure l of the drawings is aseetional view of my invention. l
Figure 2`is a .View of'4 the same inV perspective.: .Figure 3ds a side view. t
l My invention "relatesto bridle-bits, and ',consist-s in the construction `andnovel arrangement o'f the bars,
` and the swivel-joint, Iwhereby they are connected toether.
.The letters A represent the bars olfmy bit, joined `fof ether in the center by theswiveljoirit .13, consisting of a barrel, fatt-ached to one of the bars, and a cylindrical orconical nut, b, attached to the other.
Generally I prefer the conical shape, on account of the superior strength" thereby obtained, the dovetail form ofthe joint keeping it secure.
.llieconstruct-ion of' the bar A is such as to provide an edged as well as 4a smooth or round side, and
the object'of the swivel-joint is to permit either side of the bar to be adjusted against. the corner of the l horses mouth.
The barrel of the swivel-joint is made larger in diameter t-han the breadth of either bar .in its largest 4 lpart, thereby preventing the'bt from beinga serereI one, except in the hands of an nnskillt'uldriver, as
the greatest pressure will come immediat-ely onthe Y tongue. v i There are several advantages lto be obtained in the use omy bit: f v
A check-rein may'thereb'y be dispensed irith.-`
It is `of great service in ,training colts; and'horses, that, from any canse, are inclined to.tnrx1 t.lieir heads or swerve'to one side, may be be keptstraight.`
VVhat I claim as my invention, anddesire to secure -by Letters Patent, isf The 'bars A A of' a bridle-bit, having one side rounded'and the other side edged, when connected together by the swivel-joint B, Aasspeci'ied.
lntestimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in thepresence ot' two witnesses.
