Description
iinttd* Stairs @aient @filtra ANDREW R. HARRIS, 0F S'I. LOUIS, MISSGURI.
Letters .Patent No. 105,071, dated-July 5, 1879,
MARINE-ENGINES. 4% Thel Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
-To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ANDREW R. HARRIs,`of St. Louis, 1n the county of- St. Louis and State of Missouri, have made a certain new anduseful Improved Device for Indicating the Motion of Engines, 85o.; and I do hereby declare that the/following is a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying 'drawing and to the letters of refer,-l
ence marked thereon. v
This-invention has for its object the fbrnrattonof an indicating device,to be operated by the drivingshaft of theeengine used in steam-boatsor other vessels, that shall indicate to :the pilot, captain, or otherA proper oiiicer oi' the same, the exact motion (usually termed running ahead -or backing motions) of said engine; and
Said invention relates to certain levers,' which, when pnt in action, shall operate the rod or ropage attachments that govern the action of the indicating devices displ. yed in a suitable 'tablet or framein the pilot-house or other 'parts of the vessel or boat, as described.v
To enable those skilled in theart to make and use my said invention, I will nowmore fully describe the same, referring to theaccompanying Figure 1 as a sectional elevation; to
Figure 2 as a front elevation; and to Figure 3 'as a `top plan. i
On tlle'driving-shaft A of-the engine, I placca suit# able pinion, the teeth a whereof are at proper distances apart, and arel made long.
Said pinion actuates the horizontal levers C and G; these are pivoted, at c, in a suitable standard-frame.`
Said levers() and C again, actnate thehorizontal levers D D', pivoted at d.
The lever C, at its outer end, is halved, to underlie the lever D, and similarly the lever D'iis halved to underlie the lever O'.
Each of 'said levers is held on either side by spring E, secured to the standard-frame.
It s plain, therefore, that, iu a forward motion of the engine, the levers C and D will be active, while no motion 'will be transmitted to the leverD', and,
vice tersa, the levers O and D will be active, in the backward motion, while the lever D remains-station-l ary. l
From the engine-room, in which-said levers are, arranged, as aforesaid, I connect the ends of the levers D D by wires, rods, or ropage, E, and suitable' belll. crank lever attachments, in any proper manner, sov as tooperate a' spiral spring, and f', arranged in a proper frame and' tablet,' ,F,, in the pilot-house, or other parts of the vessel where it is deemed preferable `to display said tablet.
For anl initial adjustment of the parts for conne'cf tion, a turn-buckle, with light'and left threads, Will other spring may be inserted in the line of r'opage, t0 allow for any distortion of the vessel, or undue strain- The tablet Ff or indicating knobs may 'be suitably' lettered or designated, to more clearly understand the movement of the parts, as desired.`
When, therefore, the levers are'operated by the-enh' gine-shaft, it is plain that, by the arrangement of the different parts, a reciprocating motion is impartedfre-y f spectively to eaclrindicating device, .n'hagcordance with themotion of 'the engine, and that my'said d'.- viceis 'practically effective in enabling the properoicer of the boat'tc understand the exact motion of the engine, and thus to guard against confusion and;
error, that often. result in accidents and disasters'. Having thus fully described my'said invention, What I claim isl. The shaft A, arranged with pinion having teeth a, in combination with' the levers G C', D D', substantially as and for the purpose set forth.- y
2. The levers C .0', D D', in' combination with the tablet F', arranged 'with spring F and indicating de-.I vices ff', substantially as set forth.
In testimony of said invention I hereunto s'et my Witnesses:
WILLIAM W. HERTHEL, ROBERT Bruins.
F, and indicator-knobs f be used, as vindicated in the drawing, and aspiral or'
